Clients you refuse to work for

We (well the agency I work for) has a large tobacco company for a client. I flat refuse to make those dirty fucks (tobacco company A) any more money than they already have, and the problem is, we're having a hard time finding and keeping animators and designers around. Most either flat refuse or quickly burn out (no pun intended).
So then, when I advertise for open positions, I can't specifically state that people might have to work for tobacco, but during the interview I always make a point of bringing it up.
I guess my question is, if you know you hate working for tobacco (and I can't blame you), why take the gig to begin with knowing you will be quitting after a month of work?

I've never had an ethical problem with tobacco companies and such (I'm of the belief that people are responsible for their own actions no matter how much propoganda/brainwashing/whatever... but quite simply, don't take the job. If a tobacco company approaches you, tell them that their ethics and your agency's philosophy do not align and that it will not make for a pleasant client/designer relationship. I would also advise that you make room on your site for potential employees and clients alike stating any ethical objections you have to working on various kinds of projects. Anyone you're interviewing should be aware of the atmosphere and philosophy, so this is included. I hope I didn't misread/interpret your question...

A. Because they thought they might get some of the "secret" tobacco...
B. They slowly realize that they're killing babies...
C. They want to be cool and be green...
...continue on...

well my ? was more rhetorical than anything I think anyway, so no wrong answers.
Basically, the agency is happy having tobacco as a client cause they're like a giant ATM machine, problem is getting people to work on that account. We have many accounts here, but if people get put on tobacco, they tend to quit right away. Even knowing during the interview phase that there is potential for having to work for such clients.

you make them smoke a cigarette during the interview and make sure they can endorse the product

do they quit cold turkey or use a patch to ween themselves off of it?

Yea, they shouldn't sign up if they don't want to produce that type of work. One of my mentors told me something that stuck when I was in school. Don't create design which might hurt others. Surprisingly I have had to fall back on this a few times already in my career. I even excluded myself from a project for a hunting website because I don't like cropping images of dead animals.

sooooooo... that would not make them not clients anymore wouldn't it?

are they making you smoke cigarettes? what's the big deal here?

I'm not exactly sure how you are presenting that they will be working for tobacco, but maybe you just need to lay it out more clearly. Give the opportunity to let it sink in before getting hired and try getting some feedback on the topic instead of just mentioning it?

yes take your stand, the world is forever indebted to you...
tobacco companies are no worse than most other major corporations... but maybe with your ethics you might be able to do something responsible? or not, but hey, step aside and let the next man, who doesn't give a fuck, do what they tell him...

why is this guy writing up here.... when you steal other people's portfolios no one respects you. change your name or atleast stop having the narcissism to think that anyone would want to help you. Thief.

hahahaha moamoa. I can imagine you have steam shooting out your ears, or smoke as the case may be.
