So I am guessing that the answer to 'clients you wouldn't work for.."
would be you: dedricreid.

Damn, and I was trying to give a serious emotional answer.

^^ relax man, I just like to rile people up with this handle. besides, people I work with read this site. Id be a fucking idiot to post up such a question w/ a handle known by many of my colleagues. But it sure is fun watching these sheep nearly loose their shit by reading a internet thread.

oh in that case...
Then I really have no issue working with Smoke clients. I don't smoke, but I used to, and nobody made me do it. I did it.. and I fully realized how bad it was, but I kept doing it. So if people want to smoke, let em. IF the agency wants to pay you to make ads, do it..
We have all kinds of clients here, and its not the ads that kill people, its the product. And they have a choice to buy it or not.

Right right, I mean everyone knows in their heart how they feel about smoking. I just find it strange that most who seem to be ok with it in order to get hired all the sudden have a change of heart a month or so in.

Were there unexpected problems that the designers encountered while working on the projects? I would personally never work on an account like this, but I know a few people that would be okay with it. As someone said before, people make the choice to smoke. Where this gets muddied is when the clients, the tobacco industry, purposely misleads customers. I can see where someone may get pissed off by taking on a project only to learn that the client is using your talent to be manipulative. I've worked on a number of projects like this and I really f*ing hated it. For instance -- I was asked to design a billing statement so that it would be difficult to see/find the due date, because the client made a lot of money on late fees.

- Structural problems? Do you mean differences in philosophical views?Josev
- Good design CAN make money. I believe that design should serve the end user.Josev

^ good point, thanks.
I think that is the problem, people quickly realize tobacco companies are very manipulative and tricky in their slick marketing efforts. However, I still would think most people were wise to this fact. Cigarette makers have been making billions by deceiving people for years.
BTW, do you know most tobacco companies spend nearly $1000/year in marketing per smoker? amazing. Imagine instead of advertising your product, you just handed each of your customers $1000 per year.

Maybe you're not being clear enough. Rather than say it's a possibility that you "might" work on a tobacco project, tell them that they will be required to work on the project and then be very up front about what that entails. I was made aware that a company I worked with had the Mitt Romney campaign site but didn't assume I'd be working on it...and when they asked I said hell, no.

Do you feel the same way about alcohol companies? If not, why? I would venture to guess just as many people are harmed by booze in any given year.
- antigirl0
this must be why an agency asked me 'will you work for a tobacco company?'
i thought it was a very strange question. now it makes total sense.

I also further understand what Malcolm X was talking about...
