The carpal tunnels are getting worse and I'm seriously considering a career change that would hopefully be away from computers. Anyone ever venture on something like this before?

hopefully something in the creative area..
what mouse are you using?

I had serious shoulder and wrist problems. probably 6-8 months of PT (physical therapy). nothing worked permenetly until I started studying Ving Tsun. It took about 1-2 months but now I am 100%. As far as starting a new career, I'm always working on that on the side, you should be working on a side project too. It will make you feel better.
- Nice idea. Maybe I will look into it. I had serious muscle issues for about 4-5 months. Still going, but not as bad.Jaline
- i don't think there is enough time to tell you how good Ving Tsun was for my injuries. i totally reccommend!robotron3k
- what is it?
ninjasavant - simple hand and body movements slowly strengthen your core and correct your body.robotron3k
- over time, over a few months you really notice the difference, posture, strength and strking power + you can learn to fight.robotron3k

I'm leaning towards baker or chef. Had IBM not hired me in college I'd have gone to culinary school anyway.
I've got a mouse, trackball, and tablet on my desk. Can't seem to find the right angle/combo to hurt the least. I'm just not going to cripple myself to design software.

Weird - I haven't developed anything like carpal in ten years of doing this, although I have experienced eye strain and back pain. Our ancestors who worked in mines and factories would be amazed at how grueling it can be to sit in a chair and click on stuff.

oh shit yeah @ ninja's tendonitis comment
had to rotoscope a short project once. a stylized sketching of a 5 sec clip of a busta rhymes video.... damn near killed my hand 150 frames... around 90 or so, my hand hurt so bad i kept runninhg to the sink to run cold water over it between frames

After the fallout of the .com era, I considered carpentry or construction to do something real for a change. Also thought about moving back to the mountain, and either patrolling or even just loadin chairs and getting my drink on.
All of that came crashing down when I realized I was married, had a house, sucked at carpentry, and needed to quit drinking. ffs.
- you're livin the suburban dream right there.ninjasavant
- yes. it's grand.fugged

I'm thinking of going into botany. No joke!

Bottom line is, do you want to do design? If so, I bet you can find a way around your physical problems. If not, why bother?
Ever think of working for somewhere besides IBM? My Dad worked there his whole life but I have to admit, it doesn't sound like the most exciting place to work, especially if you are a designer.

Carpentry?
How about a little insight on carpentry, and carpenters? You see one of my best friends from high school runs his own Peter-Built (check out the dot com if you please) and it takes a certain kind of person. I should know I worked with him 'for kicks' after college. If you were to make a checklist of 'requirements' it would be something like this:
- Be able to handle crap radio to the job site.
- Be able to pack own lunch to substitute for crap food.
- Be able to take crap regardless if your crew mate doesn't know how to figure out how much 5% of 50 is.
- Be able to laugh at sophomoric and vulgar humor, and of course pitch in.
- Be able to come to grips that your dimwit boss makes 4x your crap wage.
- And of course be able to withstand hours of carpentry talk.Now... if you're talking carpentry, as in woodworking/industrial design I want to have a workshop in my garage... well yeah, I can understand that type of progression.
Because believe me... you don't want to be a saw dik anytime soon.

It actually can be pretty exciting if you know how to play it. Luckily I've been in a position that if I can think it up, I can generally find a way to be allowed to do it.
I love working in design and I'm trying as hard as I can to find a way to keep doing it. But like I said, I'm going to keep the idea open of switching careers because its just not worth it if I'm on a fast track to disablement. Makes me sad for sure.
- one thing you'll find is that most all jobs suck worse, pay less and require more work. you'll be back....robotron3k

sideways mice are good too... uncrosses the bones in the wrist relieving pressure in the carpal tunnels.
http://www.google.com/products?h…I have a 'the Quill" that seems to work well.
- Oh yeah, add the fact that my hand is over 4 inches wide to my problems with ergo mice but I'll take a look at these.ninjasavant

I know you're not trying to find out how to cure carpal tunnel, but i'm sure you'll keep using a computer no matter where you go.

this is the new device on US market that replaces the mouse and doesn't cause carpal tunnel. Already very popular in scandinavia, mecca of ergonimics. I know the guy who invented it and have one at home. It's not very convenient to draw with it, but for all other activities it's totally cool. It won 1st prize on ergonomics show in vegas this year.
- how does it work?
ninjasavant - move the bar with fingers to control cursor. Seems weird at first, but actually really easy.arseni
