also meant to say: don't give up! you clearly have talent

Sometimes the reason you don't get through to an agency is down to pure bad. A technique I use at my design agency is to grab half the pile of Resumes and just throw them in the waste.
The ones who get thrown were unlucky - I don't want unlucky people at my place.

hey, sorry haven't read all the posts but have you considered calling up the people who didn't employ you and asking for honest feedback? it's important you come across as being extremely open when you do this so that they don't just tell you what they think you want to hear... and you could make a better portfolio site while you're waiting for that job to come through, even if it's simple.

maybe you need to become a better salesman. talent alone won't get you a job. it also has to do with luck. be in the right place at the right time can make a jackass become a celebrated creative director.

an old colleague of mine (junior art director) filled up his portfolio with fake 'commercial' stuff when he came for the interview... think that's a good idea if you don't have a lot of experience. For example: he had some alternative CD covers of which some were actually better than the original. It's all about context....
- I thought about doing this when I first left college, I wanted to do a fake wipeout racing team, not real world brief I know, but would look nice :)FallowDeer

I think in your situation and position, you really need to sit down and re-evaluate where you want to go forward. For a start, do you still want to be in Design? If so then get your act together properly. Your work is one thing but presentation is as equally as important. Set up a website of your own using Indexhibit if need be and post your work up. The work I have seen so far on your blog tends to be fairly experiemental and unfinished. Where is your commissioned or client work or projects you completed at university?
Ask yourself clearly what is your real interests and hone on that. Don't be effie here and there like your blog. And your C.V. - they are not going to care how it looks. Only a good letterhead and your experience with who/where will count. Then you show your folio at interview.
If all comes to worse, maybe consider contacting or talking to lecturers/tutors from other colleges in getting other opinions? Maybe from LCC or Camberwell?

Agree... work looks good but you have to present it better.. that's all...
And it doesn't have to be that hard...

You're living at home, so you have time to get something really good together portfolio wise... trust me once you're into paying out for stuff, you'll find life now was a lot simpler... Just don't sit around watching daytime telly!

I would say stick with it, many of my friends in manchester just gave up after a month, disappointing as some where really talented.
first thing is get a website that shows your portfolio off.
when I gave up working for myself in my own studio, the first thing I did was slap up a website, might not have been the best in the world , but it did the job and I was hired in a week (2-3 interviews) so dont underestimate the true power of the web force!
dont sign up for recruitment agecies, even though they might find an interview for you, if it comes down to you and someone else, they will go with the someone else, as if they hire you through the agency it will cost them 20% of your final wage, and face it who wants to pay that for a designer when there are plenty out there.
and make contacts as its deffo who you know rather than what you know.
good luck chap

Jonanon u sound exatly like me in very way
i went through exactly the same thing and called everyone under the sun in manchester. employment agencies are shit and couldnt ever give a toss so dnt ever deal with them. also design agencies dont particulary like dealing with recruiters anyway. hense the fact that they are fuckin useless.
the only advice i could really give is to keep trying. it took me 8months but in the end it does happen. is it a junior position ur looking for cos its like a soap opera half the time and every studio knows everyone elses business so if i hear of anything i can let u kno.

I got lucky getting into my job, sometimes its not what you know its who.
good luck!

I spent 14months unemployed before I got my first proper design Gig.
Hang in there – It will happen.
Have you registered with YCN? Got an email about a juniors job from them yesterday (I am not a junior :)

Do you keep in touch with the companies that nearly hired you? If not then you should follow up with them regularly, so when they have an opening down the road you can be reconsidered. There's a fine line between bothering potential employers, and never allowing them to forget you exist.
Also... when a job opportunity falls through, are you asking for feedback and looking for some insight as to why you weren't hired?

Ever read the book The Fountainhead?
it may help.
it may not.
Good luck, and keep your head up. The job for you is out there, you just have to go find it and wrastle it into submission.

Who are you trying to find a job as? If anything related to producing work for web, then you need a site. Man, you need a site anyways. Also, show more commercial work... a lot of stuff in your folio looks too experimental. You can also ditch the idea of finding a job, but just work for yourself. Run your business, get your own clients. If getting freelance projects for little money is a problem, then think what the hell is wrong... If that goes well, do more commercial projects, put a good site together with more solid works and try again. Don't spend too much time redesigning your resume...this shit won't help. Better spend this time doing work (even for free) or looking for it.

Abandon your material mindset and travel the world. We can meet at ABC No Rio and do acid together while reminiscing about simpler times.
