diets do work. my doctor is putting me on topamax (could be a placebo) and said I should go on a diet that I can live with.
- Yeah, and doctors know everything.czawada
- A diet you can live with, is pretty much eating in moderation.dirtydesign

It's been proven, diets don't work.
If you want to be healthy, loose weight, etc it's all about healthy eating and regular exercise... lifestyle change.

atkins is awful for you. the amount of fat and cholesterol that people consume instead of carbohydrates is completely unhealthy. not too mention that there are known diseases and problems that you can wreck upon your body by ingesting more protein that your body can handle. also YOU NEED TO EAT CARBS. they are the building block of your entire body. carbs = simple sugars = energy
eat healthy or at least in moderation. use your best judgement. if you think you shouldn't have the 3rd beer or that 5th piece of pizza then don't, and just try to get 2 to 3 hours of exercise a week... you should be golden
- 3rd beer? I can never stop at 3... more like 13th but by that time it's too late.5timuli

I tried atkins and lost 5 lbs. It was just too gross to keep up.

I lost about 50 lbs. on Atkins.
Still not sure how healthy it is though.

The past few months, I've been eating a lot of vegetables, rice and 1-2 liters of evian water a day, and I lost a good amount of weight off my mini belly.

I have doing weight watchers for about 2 years now. I have dropped from 67lbs total and have maintained a 10lb difference for about a year. In that time however I have quit smoking and have exchanged a great amount of fat for muscle, and over all health.
In contrary to what people say is that diets do work, because losing weight is easy. Eat less calories than you burn, however maintaining weight loss and preventing health problems is difficult. I know a number of people who have gone on various diets, atkins, fat burners, etc. They always always gain it back plus more, because they usually have very little muscle mass to begin with and by dieting they break down their muscle tissue further.
As for my experience, I had a lot of weight to shed, I was also in very bad shape and had horrible eating habits. By excercising i was able to fight off depression and build my esteem, and by using weight watchers I was able to watch my portion control and drop some pounds...
...it's an ongoing process.

I agree. Diets do work. woody, I've got a buddy who's doing a weight watchers plan right now and he's down just over 30 lbs. over the last 6 months, which is great. He was topping the scale at 300+ lbs. ! I tried to give him all kinds of tips and workout regimens, but they all went to the wayside. But as soon as his Dr. told him his health was in danger he turned to w.w. I'm just glad he found something that worked. Their shit is beyond just the diet though. He has weekly weigh-ins and meeting support as well which is great. I told him as soon as he gets down around 250 I'm takin his ass running!
For anyone who doesn't want to go to WW or anything similar, then try to just use common sense. Simple math will lead the way: lower your caloric intake. If the amount of calories you take in are greater than the amount of calories you burn, well, there's your answer. Drop those calories and you'll see the change fairly quickly, even if ever so subtle. Of course, there's always wild cards involved: metabolic rates, thyroid issues, diabetes, etc.
btw, good job woody!
- i just added running to my workouts, I start with a 5k, weight train, then i workout 5 rounds on the heavy bag...it's rough!woodyBatts

vegetarian with exercise and plenty of protein here.
- Did you lose weight when you converted into a vegetarian? I wouldn't want to lose any more weight.visualplane_

depends how you define something as "working". sure, you can lose weight on some crash diet, but you've done nothing to fix the underlying problems, so it has in fact, not worked.
- stupidresponse0
i have the opposite problem though, i need to focus on eating or i waste away to nothing
