I'm not talking about the big agenicies, in fact i avoid those sweatshops. But if your company does good work people will come to work for you.
For my first job I moved to Leicester, because the company had great clients.
Look at TDR ... they are in sheffield and it's grim up there but i bet any designer would move up there to work for them.
I think your best bet is to look for some newblood, someone who is talented and is looking for a foot in the door.

It's all about the studio environment, you can do great work for nearly any client, whether they're well-known, sexy or otherwise is irrelevent...
To each his own, but from what I've seen of the UK, outside of London, I'd really consider living in Brighton or Nottingham.. I'd actually prefer the smaller less pretentious cities that still have a good creative vibe...

yep sexy clients are usually a lot less rewardng... but then its a skill i guess to get the most out of them

All cities are pretentious. It's a little lame to say London is solely that.

it's a catch 22, having to educate clients about even the basics of design and communication constantly is taxing, but ultimately a greater challenge and they usually appreciate it more than a large client who just needs to spend their budget...

I suppose it's fair to say that all cities have pretentious people but in some it's easier to stear clear of it... I guess it's actually just the fashionistas everywhere in London that make me cringe...
It's pretty laid-back in A'dam, and I find it lacking pretention completely, but that could also be me not understanding the language ;)

true... big clients tend to have so many layers of people in their 'engine' that you end up with this monster actually only creating something rather small

I found soho a lot less pretentious than shoreditch... but i guess that ain't a huge surprise...
But there are still really good people there... been sharing a studio with some lads who have been sound

Mime artist, I live in Chelmsford and it takes about 12-15 minutes in a car to where we work. No worries about parking. It's literally just off the A12.
Play frisbee in the grounds at lunch or Wii or get up early and have 9 holes of golf.

I live in the east end... but will be taking on projects after 1st November... so if you ever need any help

2 things.
Going by the info/ stats I get through CLFW i would say that London and Nottingham are the main areas for jobs in the UK.
BUT I am myself looking for a new job (being laid off in the next few weeks) and I have applied for a few jobs but generally the positions either don't offer what I am looking for (varied work, decent pay, great company to work with) or require a stupid amount of skills (designer required must know photoshop, mysql, unix and be from a print background with a masters degree and have 6 years experience in a top notch agency - 18,000 a year). There are some great positions out there, you just need to know the right people.

I worked in London once upon a time.
Too many black boggies!!
Smellvetica, you know Miss Plews?

Any print designer that doesn't know unix shouldn't really be in the business. imho.

James, our problem is kind of our workload now but I'm just having to get through it at the moment. Maybe if you're about in November you could help us out.
Would you want to work as engage in collaboration with us ? I'm not sure how you've worked in the past with other companies.
