I'm finding it quite difficult to find and employ a decent UK based web designer. Tried posting the position on Design Week website. Nothing.
Anyone tried Krop on this site? It looks a bit US-centric to find anyone useful.

are u new here? krop is probably the best and most useful jobposting site, especially in UK.

Chinwag has a jobs message board that used to be free, but is now I think £100 per post.
99.9% of job on there are agents, but there is the odd posting from acutal agencies themselves.

what is it you are looking for and what are the benefits?
you might also try posting on CLFW:

digilee, you need to switch that site so that people can create usernames and not divulge their name, unless it's solely for freelancers.

Having the same problem. Probably only downside to not being in London. local paper attracts loads of terribly rubbish people, Design week seems to attract people from London who don't really want to move out and the web seems to attract people from all over the world that just want a visa.

Thanks for the feedback. I think maybe I'll try posting the vacancy on Krop and see if anyone replies. I was very disappointed with the Design Week website.
Modernstyle, I haven't been to Newstoday for a while but I think I first came here in 2002. I posted our last vacancy on the previous job site they had and got quite a few responses but when I checked out Krop it only seemed to have nine or so UK vacancies and they were pretty much all in Shoreditch. As I say, I guess I should just post it and see what happens.

Parent,
That is exactly what we've found so far. We're in the grounds of a Georgian mansion with it's own golf course for god's sake but that's no good it would seem (OK, i know Golf's not exactly cool, but playing it instead of working kind of is).

I'm finding it very hard to find decent candidates for design and development at all levels the recruiters don't seem to help much either.

it's part to do with what clients you have and where you are.
All the good people get snapped up by the top agencies that have the best clients and are doing quality work.

someone handing out UK visas?
:)
I'll be looking for something in the UK around next May/June...

I think I chatted with a guy named Hamish from Glue a year or so ago... not sure if it was Glue, rings a bell though...

That's not entirely true Leigh. A lot of big agencies knock out the same old derivative stuff for corporate clients that are often pretty conservative, especially if they have their holy brand guidelines and no imagination. We do work for some monstrously large telecoms companies via another agency and for the most part they have very rigid requirements so you're just laying stuff out.
Smaller companies often have to be way more creative. Working to tight budgets means some real creativity is required to get a decent result.
Big companies are more likely to pay more and are in London which is a large part of why people want to work for them. Certainly as much as the kind of work they're doing.
To be honest, I'd be happy to find someone who was competent with some design potential, but even that's too much to ask it would seem.
