Hey Guys,
I am sending my resume out there to different companies here inNYC and I am curious what do you think about those. R/GA, AvenueARazorfish, Wieden + Kennedy New York. Do they suck? What's your favourite agency in NYC? What would you recommend. I am basically looking for a Visual/Flash Designer position. I am the guy who can design flash sites and prototype them in AS and let the developer finish it.
I would appreciate any recommendations.

If you can do flash real well you'll make a buttload more just freelancing at the 3 places u mentioned.

RGA: cool work but you wont see a light of day
Razorfish: hardly any micro site work, more big site builds
W+K: good place, dont know too much
Either way, you wont get to do any design, most likely you will just do flash programming
- MrD0
if you want to do more design, go to smaller shop
i think even at firstborn, if you go there as flash, you will mainly do flash and not too much design

agree with MrD. i haven't been at any big agency where an AD does flash. either you design or you do flash.
and at the moment, everyone is looking for flash guys. it's so hard to find a great flash programmer with a great sense of style and motion.
- MrD0
indeed
there is a need for a flash person who can visualize and work with designer to come up with animation / transitions etc and able to translate the design to flash in an effective manner

designers are a dime a dozen. if you can make things move well in flash you can find work. if you can develop flash back to front you can find work easily and get paid well.
try akqa, they'll hire anyone

(Jul 11 07, 10:14)two of them work at juxt. well, they both did a while back. now just one is there...and yeah, they are really hard to find.

hmm, a friend of mine is working at RGA right now as an interaction designer. She said she is not touching to anything visual, all she does is information architecture, wireframes, what happens when you press this etc. So she also said, visual designers are the ones that create the visual feeling of the site, and then there is visual/flash designers which create concepts visuals and also prototype it and then give it to technical staff to finish it. I am not sure how much you are able to push in "prototyping" but I have never understood tha fact that flash programmer is supposed to create the style and motion. it's designer's job. That's why as a designer knowing some AS would help to achieve that in my humble opinion. I am looking for such a company.
sorry for longwinded response.
- MrD0
if you know the answer, than go to that place
i mean it wont be like with any other agencies

JDK DESIGN
- MrD0
actually JDK wouldnt be a bad idea. they have small tiny team and its not their core business, so u would be designing and producing
- ozhanlion0
so wait, are you saying this is not possible? I see your point about small agencies. IT makes totally sense. I should also mention that I only have one year of working permit in here (OPT) so the reason that I am looking for a job in a larger company is I believe I would have a better chance they sponsor me. Am I dreaming?
- wendog0
noo, you arent dreaming, but I think what everyone said here is quite valid...try smaller shops if you are looking to actually do mostly design...They still may be able to sponsor you...but if your only option to get established is a big company like RGA, or WK - then start there and more options will open for you...Some good companies in addition to what you mentioned here in the city are:
AKQA
Big Spaceship
WDDG
HUGEINC (if you like HTML)
The Barbarian Group
Code and Theory
and a ton more
- MrD0
If you go to RGA like as you described, you may get what you are looking for.
but smaller agency or none interactive agency will give you more opportunity to do more design
now, as for sponsorship, yes smaller places usually do not do sponsorship
mind you places like HUGE will do sponsorship but they are interactive only so you may not be able to do design as much
when you interview with the shops, say JDK, ask them if they do sponsorship. but asking for sponsorhip / or mentioning it in the beginning, you will lose leverage of higher salary. dont put that as your requirement in your initial negotiation. Ask them if they do but not required.
- MrD0
wendog's list is pretty good
most interactive shops
= you will mainly do only flash
= some may ask you to do both
= they are used to sponsorship so more chance of getting itmost big agency
= you will mainly do only flash
= they are used to sponsorship so more chance of getting itbig or small or boutique brand / traditional shop with tiny web unit
= you will most like to do design and flash
= they usually dont do sponsorship
- ozhanlion0
that was a pretty clear description.
Thanks a lot MrD and the rest of the crew!
- modernstyle0
It might help if you pay for parts of the sponsorship yourself.
