well, in the midst of losing all my work, i am gonna buy a external backup HD for my backup HD.
any suggestions? I am looking at LaCie Firewire drives... thoughts?

I would advise going thru tigerdirect or newegg rather than the apple store. You can buy an enclosure and whatever drive you like and assemble it yourself in 5 minutes and save a heap of money and get a better drive.

New Egg is probably best if you live in the U.S.
I recommend Western Digital, but that's because I actually have one and it's been perfect. Not sure about other brands, but it seems to be a hit or miss with Lacie.

which Western Digital one do you have? (http://www.newegg.com/Product/P...

they are all the same. I use Western Digital
cheaper faster and same HD. just different casing
and dont EVER buy HD from apple or other retailer, the WD and Lacie sell their stuff cheaper or send you to a link where you can buy it cheaper

newegg is good but always find the link from the manufactuer and do comparison.
that page does it for you

lacie's are solid.. couple people on NT always grumble about them but as with any product there's gonna some unhappy customers.
i've got two D2/500gbs running all day everyday, super quite, and another one that's prolly 7 years now and still spinning strong.

I don't do heavy design work, so i got something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr…iBook 250 GB
I got it on sale at Best Buy, but the price at New Egg is pretty good. I think there's a Premium version for some more money.
If you want, go for the 500 GB + models.

I second lacie too, I got my 6th drive a few months ago, its the 3rd time in a row I get Lacie. never a problem, I got 2 of my "fry's make your own drive" crashed on me.
I know that its all in the case, the drive its always the same, but I had never a problem with Lacie so far, and I will keep buying them till I do.

besides what I said earlier, I have a lacie porsche 250gb external and it is great (knock on wood)

I like Maxtor's One Touch IIs. I've got 5 of them and they've been great. Good software for backups too.
I've got one LaCie, too, and that's been fine.
There was a recent sale at OfficeDepot, I think, for a 750gb Maxtor One Touch II (different than the Personal Storage models), for $165, pretty cheap.
Check www.techbargains.com for great sales.

icybox cases are pretty good (if you got that company over there as well ;)

i have a 250 gb lacie porche also...i saw some complaints about lacie porche a few months ago in the (PVN) but I haven't had a problem.
Get two drives. a firewire drive that has a power source and a USB 2 drive with no power source. Use the larger firewire drive as your ultimate back up. Treat it like a baby. Use the thinner, smaller USB drive as the in between.
Treat them both with a lot of respect. Don't knock them around. Don't batter them. Don't get them wet. etc. etc. etc.
I have never had a problem with any electronic device that i took care of. If the USB one craps out due to mishandleing you have a backup of your backup.
Go right out right now and buy two. It is better to be backed up then posting on the PVN about how sucky your equipment is because you just lost everything.

I too have a 250 gb lacie porche. Nothing to do with the car manufacturer it would seem, but no complaints here about it.

I have three Lacie D2 and two of them have totally chrashed. Alot of people doing video seems to think that Lacie drives suck too. I have a ton of Maxtor drives that I shuffle stuff around to other people with. I drag them around quite alot in my backpack and they always works perfectly.

I just went through all this last week and after reading and talking and posting etc I ended up with a Lacie D2/500gbs.
I have a 15" MBP and will be doing a lot of video work this month. The Lacie has 4 transfer types and the FW800 is super fast. I can then use it on my PC or take it anywhere with the additional USB connections.
So far it's super quit, has an auto shut off for when I turn off the laptop and it been really fast. I transferred almost 35GB the day I got it in less that 20mins. Maybe it's not fast but after using my USB stick for 2 years I thought it smoked!

Seagate or Western Digital.
Seagate has a 5 year warranty. Unheard of by the other brands. This shows they are confident with their products. I will buy no other.

(Jul 11 07, 01:40)I run LIVE video installations at nightclubs, museums, artshows, music festivals, from Lacie drives.
(content stored on drives, connected to FW800, to a mac running Modul8) never a problem so far. and that has to pretty much be the ultimate taste of speed and response.
