I just went through all this last week and after reading and talking and posting etc I ended up with a Lacie D2/500gbs.
I have a 15" MBP and will be doing a lot of video work this month. The Lacie has 4 transfer types and the FW800 is super fast. I can then use it on my PC or take it anywhere with the additional USB connections.
So far it's super quit, has an auto shut off for when I turn off the laptop and it been really fast. I transferred almost 35GB the day I got it in less that 20mins. Maybe it's not fast but after using my USB stick for 2 years I thought it smoked!
