Seagate or Western Digital.
Seagate has a 5 year warranty. Unheard of by the other brands. This shows they are confident with their products. I will buy no other.

(Jul 11 07, 05:30)That's true. WD has 3-year.

I run LIVE video installations at nightclubs, museums, artshows, music festivals, from Lacie drives.

(Jul 11 07, 06:44)Good for you, but that does'nt change the situation with me having problems with 2 out 3 Lacie discs.

One thing with the Porsche LaCie - just make sure it doesn't require a separate power supply.
Hopefully they've changed this now, but mine needs one and I really wish it didn't.
Otherwise, no complaints.
Yet.

Buy anything. As long as you stay away from Maxtor.

Why would you say that? I am curious. I've got 5 externals (3 within a year, 1 is 3-4 years old and one is 2 years old) and have had numerous internals. Never a single problem.
Western Digital (internal) is the only catastrophic failure I've experienced.
FYI, Maxtor is now part of Seagate.

Argh, I got that Western Digital MyBook awhile back ... and now it loads the drive, but not the data.
:X
I have like 25 gigs of shit on it that I do not have backed up onto discs yet.
Anyone else have this problem?
- Jaline0
nope
*knocks on wood
I plan on buying another one soon, but not sure which brand. Maybe I will stick with WD. But Seagate seems pretty great too...

Ugh ... it seems data gets corrupted if it is not safely removed every single time it is disconnected from the computer.
I am pretty sure one day while I was running late I just set my computer to stand by and when it wasn't on - I just unplugged it.
... Which has never been a problem on my other external. :X
It is actually 200 gigz0rs of shit I have not backed up to disc, as it still shows how much space is used, and how much is free.
This is fucking absolutely heart breaking.

hopefully there is some way to recover it. check out the site.

Thanks Jaline!
I was looking at the WD Support site, and my particular error is not there.
The drive letter still shows up and shows how much space, other people seem to have a problem with it not showing up at all.
I guess I am going to have to Geek Squad it or something.
I have tried every open USB Port too. :X
Drats.
My laptop has like 400 megs free on it too, and I really wanted to hustle things off of it, haha.

try plugging it into a mac?

(Jul 12 07, 02:58)maxtor got bought out by seagate last year.
lacie does not make drives. they make enclosures.
For video work I just got a g-raid. Hella fast!

I've been using a LaCie for a few years now without any hassle. It crashed once not long after I got it, then I formatted it for Mac-Only (thank you IT guy) and never had a problem since.

I just had two LaCie's crash in a row. I'd say ixnay on the Cie's. I just bought a Western Dig. Fingers crossed.

The Networkable Seagates are good. We've had them for years.

it's because you have to unmount the filesystem. it's like turning off your car on a hill and not putting it in park.
