i have a 250 gb lacie porche also...i saw some complaints about lacie porche a few months ago in the (PVN) but I haven't had a problem.
Get two drives. a firewire drive that has a power source and a USB 2 drive with no power source. Use the larger firewire drive as your ultimate back up. Treat it like a baby. Use the thinner, smaller USB drive as the in between.
Treat them both with a lot of respect. Don't knock them around. Don't batter them. Don't get them wet. etc. etc. etc.
I have never had a problem with any electronic device that i took care of. If the USB one craps out due to mishandleing you have a backup of your backup.
Go right out right now and buy two. It is better to be backed up then posting on the PVN about how sucky your equipment is because you just lost everything.
