(May 29 07, 11:11)Wait...you work at Rogers or something?
- Jaline0
My company paid for me to get training in Microsoft Frontpage.
That's right, folks.
You heard it here first.
I knew more than the instructor did, fyi.

Is work from home really that important? I've hired about 8 people over the last few months, interviewed probably over 200 people and I don't think anyone really valued it.

JALINE! I don't know what's worse, that you knew more then the instructor or that you actually know frontpage... go to your room!

For people who commute long distances to get to work, having a day or two at home to do work is valuable.

(May 29 07, 11:15)It's nice to do once in a while.
To be honest, I get more work done at home since it's more comfortable. But to some people it can be more distracting, obviously.
But it's probably best to leave the house / apartment / box once in a while.

comp time without a doubt. i mean hour for hour...not some random bullshit "we'll give you some comp time after this project is done" sort of thing. i'm tallking every extra hour i work i get an hour of equal comp time!

"Is work from home really that important?"
may sound weird, but even though i work out of my home office, i honestly do not feel it is that big a deal. it is really all about the environment and work. if i find the right place that has it and want me to join, i would. easy.
i do though, have zero respect for an employer who feels that not caring for your work environment and office space as a critical element. those who have crap furniture, colors, layout, etc get crap work; it is that simple. for a place people spend more time in than their own dwelling, have some respect for them and yourself and make it appealing. the work will folllow.

I guess this is a pretty small town with your standards (pop. 2 mill) and we don't have the same commute problem you do.

(May 29 07, 11:19)Absolutely. Environment is everything. You spend almost as much time there as you do in your home.

off time, hands down. big bags of money help, but to me they're a second to time off
- jox0
...and I just saw you said exactly that *blush*

So assuming everyone gets another 2-3 weeks vacation a year, will that have any impact outside, say a 2 month radius from when they use the time off?
What I'm saying is.. does it really make a difference on a november afternoon when everyone planned their big time off 8 months later?

you guys actually work?

(May 29 07, 11:15)yes, not about commute as much. I just work better when I am away from the office for some reason.

i went from my own office to a cubicle. I feel like Dilbert.
I second the work environment thing. Especially if u spend more than 8hrs. Most people get less sleep than they spend in the office.
Other than that, I would definitely say, benefits, early completion bonuses, paid training/seminars, etc.
Definitely makes the employee feel integral to the successful operations of the company in question.
