yeah, Beck was great. But he is not iin the technicall wizardry category. And I think that's what we were talking about.
And to his point of classical guitarists are the most talented... What does he think 90-95% of the top metal guitarists are schooled in. Yup, classical.

no one's sexed-up during a slayer set.

(May 11 07, 06:56)hehe, quite the opposite. But after shows I have seen Kerry King roll into the strip clubs and own every hot chick in the place.

I am a symphonic rock kind of guy.

a lot of bands had really strong first releases, but commercial success seemed to really soften them. that first la guns cd is still a good listen, depending up the mood.
my theory:
write a power ballad = no longer metal

(May 11 07, 07:03)yeah..maybe..I tend to find alot of skilled players in jazz though..at least in terms of total musical knowledge. There's a certain techincal mastery for the classical guitar, but the knowledge side of it isn't as vast as a trained jazz player I'd say, basically because the music doesn't call for it.
And as for technique..well, there are techniques for playing a nylon string classical guitar and there's techniques for playing a Les Paul through a Mesa Boogie stack at club/Arena levels...two different, albeit related things...but if you just hand a classical player who has never played a super loud amplified guitar before he's going to sound like shit...

(May 11 07, 07:07)OK, trick question - was Metallica's "One" a power-balled? What about Paradise City from GnR?
- blaw0
paradise city is not a ballad. november rain is a ballad, whatever lyrics you choose to sing to it.
the black album was pretty much the beginning of the end for me. was, in fact, the last $15 bucks that band got from me.
take motley crue... first two albums kicked ass. suddenly, "we're on our way, home sweet home."
*pukes.
- TheBlueOne0
blaw we are in agreement.
Metallica were great up and through AJFA..the Black album just sucked for me..I was like, "Who are you and what did you do with Metallica?"
- ********0
Supposedly the the Black album is the bands pinnacle according to some well known names.
But I don't get it. Cups and Cakes.
- TheBlueOne0
naw..they peaked with MoP, AJFA was interesting (although the production fucking sucks ass)..Black Album is just horrid..come on "Enter Sandman"??
Slayer and maybe, maybe Testament were the only 80's thrash act that still sound good to my ears. I mean I can'r listen to Anthrax..I loved those guys but they just sound dated..as does alot of 80's thrash..but Slayer is just timeless, they're a machine..

yeah, MoP was it for me too.
What about Sepultura? The Max days, I still jam on Arise
- madirish0
MoP fucking rocks. i love that album. i will be rocking that today for sure.
- blaw0
igor's still one of my favorite drummers.

mine too, I would just watch him when live. Insane, he is like animal.
I like what he did with Roots, although people say that was a sellout album.
- TheBlueOne0
Yeah..good call on Sepultra...
But I'll tell you, I was never a big fan of the "cookie monster vocals"...the little band/ensemble I played in High School we were really into thrash stuff, but the bass player/vocalist was all about the cookie monster vocal thing and it just turned me off...and it killed alot of metal for me in the mid-late 90's were everyone did it...
God bless my old high school buddy cause he's still out on the road making a living with it for over almost 20 years:

OK, we need some tuneage in this thread..I'll start with this, although it's from 1978 this band certainly influenced alot of early 80's bands:
- blaw0
i was 13 and metallica (supporting puppets) opened for ozzy.
it was my first metal show, general admission... i was fucking floored.
i dig immolation. hats off to your buddy for keeping at it.
and i do love a good death metal vocal. john tardy sings my lullabyes.
- TheBlueOne0
Oh...and here's drunken Malmsteen on the plane unleashing the fury:
