Brent used to come in and listen to us go over our set and drink all my wine. I would alwyas look up and he would be out the door and my bottle was empty. F-er.

(May 10 07, 11:43)I'm kinda happy to know that a metal band that does a theme album around Moby Dick drinks wine by the fucking bottle. I mean knowing it's wine and not just budweiser or something make my metal heart just that much more lighter...

I'm glad the blues got out of metal, i don't really like blues that's why I never bought a Zep album.
I hear you when you say that guitarists were expected to play all technical but i think that's what defines metal in a way, otherwise it's punk, or blues or alternative.
The great metal guitarist were the ones that had a nice balance between technique and feeling.

I hear ya Daro, but who in metal today is playing with "feeling"? I knwo it's broadly subjective, and it could be that I'm getting old an dshit, but I don't hear it...lots of souless technical playing out there...
And I mean c'mon, Sabbath, Priest, Saxon, Accept, even early Metallica had some connection to blues based riffiage...

Today's metal is not only soulless but skill-less. It's just strumming with heavy distortion. I don't know man, i haven't heard any good new metal bands.

I know thye aren't smoking, but ISIS has some feeling.

Daro
(May 10 07, 12:08)I don't know man..some guys out there have chops, some nice tight and rhythmically interesting patterns, but I don't hear anyone trying to be different, other than coming up with different subgenre names "Like we do Scandinavian Doom Folk Metal"..I mean WTF IS that? And sure, call it whatever you want but you're just recycling the same crappy riffs and playing it through the same POD as the next guy. It's not only the guitarists that are same-y sounding...

Dudes from L.O.G got some good stuff.
And as for skill, good god listen to meshuggah. Again they arent shredders but the timing and structures they come up with is unreal.
- TheBlueOne0
meshuggah actually scare me..it's like metal rhythms for quantum physicists..crazy shit..
Here's a name that didn't come up in this thread but should have:
- ********0
yeah, they scare me too in a good way. Love their stuff.
Chaosphere is always on heavy rotation around here.
this is cool
and people who dont play, dont tell me that shit is easy please
- TheBlueOne0
nice...crazy ass shit...but it won't get you laid...and it probably sounds worse the more you drink...so based on that criteria - is it metal? Or like post-metal?
:)

hahahah , i know right.
I think they are callin it math metal now a days.
- TheBlueOne0
"math metal"..oh for fucks sake..enough with the metal sungenre..you know, either it's metal or it's not...
And speaking of 80's guitar geeks:

- TheBlueOne0

(May 10 07, 12:58)Yes I sold that. BC I am an idiot. Other things I have sold/gave away, in order of stupidity:
1) Original Ibanez Tube Screamer
2) Original Chandler Tube Driver
3) ADA mp-1
4) Early 70's vintage Foxx Volume/Wah/Fuzz pedal
5) Ibanez RG550 model, circa 1987 - they just reissued the fucking 20 year anniversary one for like $1400.00 I gave that guitar away. Gave it away. It was 1998 and nobody wanted fucking pointy Japanese guitars. I couldn't even sell the fucking thing then..now it's worth so much money...

I have one, was silver/blue until I got the bright idea of stripping it and doing a natural finish on it. All of when I was 16 so the craftsmanship is a little shotty to say the least. I wanna take it to get repainted.
- TheBlueOne0
I had the white one with the maple neck/fingerboard...I stickered that son of a bitch all over...played great..towards the end I had so much fret wear..That's why I gave it away..I sholda refretted the thing...Ibanez stopped making the maple fretboards after that for a looong time...and I love maple...
