In all honesty, there is no company that makes "death-proof" products. And not every product you buy will be problem free. The general theory is that only people who experience problems complain, while those who have positive experiences don't speak about it unless they're asked. Go to the Apple forums, and that's what you'll see.
Maybe I'm a lucky dude, but every Mac product I've ever bought has lasted me for years, problem free. I still have a Quicksilver G4 that I bought in October 2001... works flawlessly. iPod Mini, Nano, Shuffle, iPod g5.5, iBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook (black), Intel iMac. No problems with any of them. Ever. Everyone's experience is different.
As for getting support. Same deal. My local Apple Store is great. The one a few miles away... craptacular. Your mileage may vary.
Probably not useful in any manner, but that's my $0.00000001.

i would still buy apple cause its pretty but also required to use at work
i been a long mac guy but i do know that the sense of community of Apple has dissapeared
that is replaced with egorance and superiorty complex.
it has become a church of apple where its not about the product but its about how to preach to others why they shold switch or they will go to hell

(Mar 23 07, 06:02)True, except it doesn't change that fact that everyone gets Apple Care and has to use it before maybe even 1 year is up, whereas it seems to happen less with other MP3s (and I've never gotten a warranty type thing with any other MP3 player).

(Mar 23 07, 06:05)I've never bought AppleCare. Never will. If I start having trouble with my Apple Products and get to a point where I'm disappointed with their quality. I'll switch to a different company. And probably experience the same issues.

yeah, everyone has different issuse.

My friend, a webdesigner, is not allowed to show his iPod at work. Not that it's officially forbidden, but it would be an inappropriate thing to bring to work..
he works at Creative Labs

actually heard from a guy who used to work for an apple licensed retailer that they don't build ipods to last more than 1-2 years. no electronics are built to last anymore.

(Mar 23 07, 05:37)the battery usually won't last more than two years that is why you buy apple care and before 2 yrs is up you get it tested and if it is below 50% retention level they replace it for you...that is what I did
I would buy a nano before I bought a video...
Flash = no moving parts$349 harddrive = one bad drop and it's done
also you can recycle the broken one and can get 10% off a new one...
- DUKIE08220
you could always do this with your ipod

You're all marketing suckers.
I was one too. It took me one iMac, one Powerbook and 2 iPods to realise Apple is the distillation of a nice, beautifully crafted chasis product stuffed with a properly designed interface.
Still, after hundreds of threads in which we all agree at how bad Apple customer service is...you´re still buying?
Please, start making enviromentally conscious decisions. Honestly!

i have an ipod that is over 5 years old and it still works...i mean the battery is shot but i expected that
i have dropped it alot (like i do all my phones, etc) and there are some bad sectors on the drive, but it still plays cause i ran the disk repair thing a few times and then erased the drive using the zero out all data option...
and yeah, i have a friend who just graduated from an industrial design program and he said that all electronics are made to have a 2 year product life...
apparently when you design a product you have to decide it's product life to help you pick materials and components, etc...makes sense

Apple doesnt suck, stop being dramatic.
your BROKEN PRODUCT sucks.
people have bad experiences with every brand out there.

other smaller space MP3 players use flash drives so they dont really need to power a HD which a iPod uses, thats why so many iPods fuck up after a while

Every piece of Apple hardware i've has had some kind of malfunction after a relatively short timespan. 1st imac, HD went just after a year. 2nd imac, Combo drive refused to read DVD's again just after a year. 1st ipod, hd packed up after 18months, same with my last one. Now i've had a new imac at work, only 2 months old and some dodgy grey pixels have appeared. Is it really worth going to Applecare?

i got a 5 yr old ipod that still works and also a new nano which i use with Nike+ for running. i have a MBP at home and use an iMac at work. in general, my experience with apple products are pretty good.
especially considering to my old sony vaio which crapped out on me so many times.
also, my apple stock share gained enough so what i buy is basically off of the profit i made from the stock.

Time for a Zune! I'm really go to check it out and see how it is. My ipod will probably be coming to an end soon, so I need something new.
Wish the Zune was a bit smaller. Probably will hit it's stride by v.3 or so...

I'll stick with the iPod, most likely, for music and entertainment.
But I won't be buying a computer from them since they're out of my budget. PC's are so much easier to buy, plus you can get wider and larger screens for a lower price compared to a MAC.
