Paint is the best. Almost as good as Kidpix.

ken-
its petty for you to complain about something that all designers go thru.
the whole point of being a designer is being able to problem solve any challenge thrown at you.
there is nothing wrong with you wanting to be able to complete a job with the tools you "want" but you really need to change that habbit and staart trying for something else or you will lose work or be passed on when work is needed because your attitude is weak by challenging the industry, meaning if i was your employer i would not hire you a secpond time or maybe not even the first by yyou statingthat you only 1 tool over many.
get the job done, end of story, how you get there is up to you but get the job done.
or just bring in your own copy and work it out that way.
it really isnt that difficult. but it seems you are making something out of nothing...
hence...its petty.

I work in a corp environment and they pretty much gave me a blank check for software and hardware, sure the work has lots of restrictions but the cash and working environment are good.

Does anyone have a link to the advantages that Liquid speaks of?
What's the 'extract a pixel' and boxes and move layers stuff that you speak of?
I'm curious - I've never really considered fireworks.

the only thing about fireworks i've HEARD that may be nice is vector options in a raster environment, not that i can explain what that means

some people like freehand too :9

(Jan 24 07, 15:36)don't have a link, but i use firefox regularly for designing interfaces/icons/illustrations for the web. here's my take on what he might mean...
in fireworks, as you mouse over objects, there is a visual indication of the object that is directly under the cursor (ie. for a vector object, you get an outline of the vector shape, and for text, it outlines the text field) see:
it's very handy if you want to select an object. if you select that object and hold the mouse button down, you can drag it around the image. basic stuff, i grant you, but more than any other app i've used, the developers seemed to really look at workflow and make the process of using the app intuitive and easy. granted there's stuff that photoshop can do way better, but for 90% of the stuff i do in ui development, fireworks does a great job.

I hate corporate because every once in a while when I shake a client's hand, one of them gives me the limp wrist and I can feel the bones rattling around in their wrist.
f-ing corporate!

epill,
dude.... they want me to start tomorrow or monday.... I can't learn workflow and work really really fast like I can in fireworks by monday...
so me asking what they use especially with having to drive to 2 hours to work everyday...I want to make sure I aint there until midnight
also this is a friend trying to get me in.... and I dont want to make him look bad but he aint answering questions...
I think what I am going to do is just buy a little more ram for my laptop and ask them for a monitor.... I will bring a keyboard mouse and I should be good to go....
its slow but not that slow...
and fireworks is great for workflow with ui etc...dont get me wrong I use pchop for photomanip and more advanced pixel art... etc.... but the way I design its just really simple..and yes I know how to export to psds and then name the layers etc.....
seriously.... fireworks is dope...there has to be some sort of toot vid online you can look at .....
I am really afraid they are gonna kill it....but look at it this way.... indesign is supposed to be the quark killer and that focker is still around...
and at my last jobs they bought me the software I worked best with ....
ed..... its like saying....ken go design a bag.... its not my forte.... even though I know how to use illustrator...its not my skillset... and using something more difficult because it is mainstream is just weird to me....

1.you should learn photoshop well so you don't have this problem. period.
2.I had a 3-month job (in-house) that payed well, I bought 2GB of RAM and a 19" monitor and a mouse for my laptop, it was well worth it.
- liquid0
I am thinking I might just do that....
but the pshop thing....man.....I would sever a digit not to do a full design in that thing...
- version30
with layer sets, it's really not that hard now liquid, you should be able to comp something very quickly, using css, you'll only need a few actual assets from your design anyway as far as images icons go, the flow is there my friend :)
- tomkat0
I always ctrl-right-click on the objects to select them in pshop - I only use the layers for blending modes etc.. hardly see them
and if they are really interested in you as an individual, there will be a way to figure so you can work on ur stuff

I used Fireworks 2-4 in the old days, Photoshop could never produce nested, spacerless tables. Well, they're sort of obsolete now, and I felt bad using software generated code anyway.
But what's all the fuss about? You're probably angry at yourself for not knowing the tools of the trade Ken :)
I bet their buddget for your part easily exceeds your pay sixfold and guess if you just told them "perfect, I'll email you a list of my software and hardware requirements for the job tomorrow after lunch" they wouldn't wink.

I use Illy, Fireworks and PS, depends on what the client ask for. End of.
But imo...
Photoshop wasn't designed for layout, it's a bitmap editing programme for images.
Illustrator is a vector based drawing and layout tool.
Fireworks does both of the above specifically for creating web assets.
Why don't you design in Illy or Fireworks, then export to PSD and tweak the layers.
- moth0
Websites don't use vectors - why would you use Illy? I can never tell what I'm going to get when I export to JPG's etc from that app, and the compression settings are non-existent.
Personally I find Photoshop more than adequate. Most designs I make these days can be created with CSS and don't need "graphics" in the traditional sense.
