Forget playing 'in front of 500 yanks every week' - remember Nike et al wanting to bolster another revenue stream in their principal market...
I presume Beckham is one of the few football celebrities who is relatively familiar Stateside?

(Nov 6 06, 06:39)DING, DING, DING. Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner. And don't forget getting his pretty face out there to start his movie career. He can only play football for so long dudes.

250 million in 5 years..
that is almost 6k per hour, even when he is asleep...

this is almost as exciting as a 40 year old Valderama coming to the MLS in like 1997
- blastofv0
actually it is exciting, but us existing soccer fans in the US are already won over. all this BS about him saving soccer is silly. it'll be great publicity, and it'll add a drop of hype into the LA hype bucket, but it won't have much affect at all on the state of the sport in the US

Did you hit "Broadcast Live" and it just registered in the thread now or something?

To be honest, I never really had a favourite MLS team to follow...
Once Ronaldo comes over I'll probably make my decision then, heh.
It's either DC United, or the Revolution I guess.

(Jan 12 07, 04:20)Tom Cruise used to sound like a 12 year old girl too, but they "fixed" that.

I think we'll know if Beckham has changed soccer in the US when we start seeing MLS highlights on ESPN's Sportscenter. I can't imagine it anytime soon, but how cool would that be?? That would lead to possible coverage of the EPL and LaLiga in the US too. The thought excites me.

(Jan 12 07, 10:30)Now that my friend, is a pipe dream. :D
They will at first at least show highlights of select MLS games (ones Beckham is in), instead of ... nothing. Then provide score updates in the ticker until the All-Star game takes place ... then ... depending on how the ratings go will be when they (MLS/ESPN) make a surge of accessibility or let it go back into the abyss.

£2 million a month? It's all about the money, not the love of the game.

the biggest set back for soccer on mainstream TV is the non-stop 45 minute halfs. no commercial spots, no money to make.. it's not profitable. you're gonna start seeing banner ads framing your TV broadcast just like a website.

(Jan 12 07, 11:08)There are constant ads about 5 yards from teh field, and they change depending on the stadium.
Please different blocks of time are sponsored by specific brans so they have their logo on for a solid 10 minutes by the clock.
Plus the announcers talk about it.
