dead hard disk.
i knew something was wrong, so i brought home an external from work, at which point the computer just decided to die.
i'd never backed it up before because i never had enough cash for an external.
it's all gone.
all the photos i've taken over the course of the past year, all my music, all my psds for my freelance work. everything.
not to mention all the software i had... erm... acquired and have no way of replacing.
data recovery starts at £300 (which, obviously, if i can't even buy a stupid hard drive, i can't afford) and that only gets my my photos and music back...
maybe.
i know, i know, this is my fault for not backing up in the first place, but i'd have though apple would take some responsibility for the data, but no.
i feel physically sick.
thanks for listening.
:(

damn el, so sorry luv... I'll give you everything I have, but that's just mostly photo's of you were I've photoshopped your clothes off...
damn..
happened to the ex a couple years ago, 16 gigs of work etc...
Mine is dead too.. but I did back everything up :|
You can try data recovery at some point when you have the cash, it may work, but it is pricey...

Ooh, I can feel my stomach drop on your behalf - I'm very sorry to hear of your dilemna.
I guess this isn't the appropriate time to profer sage computer advice...?
NEVER, EVER trust bloody computers - they're machiavallian little bastards with their own subtle agenda.
Backing-up only gives them more time in which to bide and contemplate our fate - so good on you. You took the little fucker down before he was able to do some real damage.

keep the hard disk.
maybe boult can try something with it.
- paraselene0
they won't give me the old drive back.
if i want the old drive back, i have to pay for the new one.
which i can't do.
thanks, applecare! fuck you very much!

"i know, i know, this is my fault for not backing up in the first place, but i'd have though apple would take some responsibility for the data, but no."
why would you think that?
i had a hd crash once, but only when it would get warmed up. i had to frankenstien the hd as a slave to pull data off.
basically stripped the hd down to the bare parts and set it up as an external hd without a case and booted from a new hd i installed in the computer, then as fast as i could pulled data off the old hd before it had another meltdown.
if you can't get it to boot as a slave take it to a true computer nurd and see if they can do anything with it.
sorry.

You could of course have backed-up to DVD... but anyway. Hindsight and all that...

wait a minute - they are witholding your property?
in whos world is that allowed?
get them telt and get your fucking drive off the cunts. This is how dictators and monopolies thrive.

(Oct 11 06, 06:35)Just what I said, but with more fuckings and cunts.

if it's just a partition/boot problem one could mount the existant harddrive using Linux.
then copy all its content to a temp directory.
it happened to me twice.
- jamble0
I've had that happen a couple of times in the past, it's a shit there's no doubt.
I still don't back stuff up, never really get round to it.
Do what I do and view a hdd crash as a good opportunity for a fresh start. Sadly there's not much choice for you by the sound of it.
:(

the ultimate nightmare. Are you sure its gone? my daughter had a dead drive and the regular technicians who replaced it were able to rescue everything from it--not one of these expensive data recovery places
- rafalski0
Sometimes, if it's rather electronics than physical disk failure, you can swap the logic board with one from a different drive of the same type.
- vespa0
fuck.
what and applecare doesn't cover it? have you asked? if yes, have you shouted? if yes have you cried? if yes have you threatened?
- joyride0
yes, don't let them do anything with your drive. Tell them you need to get the data off. Shouldn't they pay to get it, since it was covered under there care policy? They replaced it since it was an obvious defect.

Apple holding the drive back is shite. you might be surprised what info you can find on google on how to get yr data back - if you had the drive. :(
