Sorry to hear your loss para. Next time we meet up, I'll drop you a tenner for your external harddrive fund. I lost 5 gb last year and exhibited extreme behaviour towards a poor girl on the helpline whose line manager threatened legal action. Computers are crap since they are designed to be perfect by imperfect humans.

omg. okay, here's what happened:
my bf took it in today because i'm at work, just before he left to go to wales (this is gonna be fun).
so now it's at this place, where it's covered by applecare, but they say that the applecare only gives me a new drive and that i don't get to keep the old one. if i want to have the drive replaced for free, that's fine, but they have to send the old one back to apple and i can't get it back.
if i want the old drive, i have to pay for the new one!
wtf!?!?!
so, i rang in and clarified this whole mess with them (clear as mud now) and told them not to do anything with my computer and that i'd come in and pick it up.
but guess who has the receipt?
that's right!
the bf!
in bfe!
jesus christ. i must have been fucking ghengis khan in my past life...

yea dude just keep a copy of linux around on a disk or another machine to mount the drive and other techie stuff.
but this reminds me, I need to pony up and get a back up drive or at least some DVD-Rs.
good luck and get ur property back.
- kelpie0
get him to post you the reciept for next day delivery - can you take the drive back, see if anything works to get your data, then take applecare up on their terms if its a lost case, or is this your only chance?
- paraselene0
EVERYONE BACKUP TODAY!
learn from my mistakes!
okay, i'm going to get the machine and speak to applecare direct on the phone at some point soon.
first things first - get the stupid receipt off the boy. somehow.
:l

kelps, i'll have him fax me the bloody thing, go in tomorrow and pick up the machine and then slow down for five minutes, get on the phone with apple and maybe go down to the regent street shop on saturday to try both honey and vinegar.
they HAVE to give me that drive back, obviously. i'm taking muscle, though. i'm taking buddha joe. he'll legalese them or some shit.

the only thing is if you do send to data recovery at some point, that act voids your applecare....
but hopefully it won't come to that...

whit!?!?
trying to recover my own data voids my applecare?
howzat?
- mr_snuggles0
as soon as a third party cracks open yer drive, it voids the warranty, sorry, not your applecare...

(Oct 11 06, 06:45)It's karma answering your t-shirt wishes: now you're fucked
Anyway, even if applecare refuse to take it in again, you'll be able to buy a faster drive which will give your pb a boost.
HD's are computer's bottlenecks and I wouldn't be surprised if you had a 4200 drive there.

I went to the apple store in Brent Cross and they're nice as pie. They even advised me not to go the Regent Street one because they'll just take your shit and send it back to apple to save their own time.
If you can be bothered - I would take it to Brent Cross and get a second opinion on keeping the drive.
- paraselene0
yeah, i'll do that. bright and early saturday morning.
good plan, moth.

*ouch*
i know that feeling. last year one of the hard discs on my machine at home started crashing then before i had a chance to back it up it ceased.
then it sounded like someone angle-grinding some metal inside the computer. yum, lovely.
i lost about a year and a halfs worth of music-making.
its taught me to back up more frequently now though.
sore lesson to learn though.

The EXACT same thing happened to me a few months back, and it's the reason why my portfolio is not up at my site. Because it's all gone. I'm still re-building everything I modified from my folio before. I was really depressed for a while after it happened, but I got over it after about a week. Once in a while you'll remember the files you lost and it'll make you sad all over again, so don't think about it too much.
People at NT just don't me to think of it as a fresh start, but it definitely won't be easy. It'll take time to re-download and re-intall everything.
Anyway, I've learned that backing up is the way to go, even if you don't have money (I didn't have money either, which is why I didn't save anything). Save up something to get an external HD or CD/DVD to backup things....it's important.
Good luck :)

About two months ago, I was working late at night, when I began hearing this worrisome whirring noise coming from my computer - I put my hear close to the unit and could distinctly hear a strange buzzing emanating from my primary HD.
I admit, I started fretting, but overall, my reaction was pretty good and responsible. I analysed the data on drives, prioritised importance (appreciating that it could go at any point) and began moving data over to other drives, in readiness for backing up. I got out all my DVDRs (or wer) and spent, all in all, I think the next 4 hours (into the wee hours of the morning) backing up data and ensuring I was prepared for a sudden shutdown. During this, I must admit I had noticed the pitch, duration and volume of the HD whirring develop and alternate but thought little of it.
It was only, quite literally on the last DVD backup (now at the unimportant end of things - silly YouTube downloads, etc) that the whirring sound became somewhat familiar - there was a distinct beat and repetition that I actually kind of liked.
That was when I looked down the side of the computer and noticed my MP3 player had fallen there, turned on and was pumping out its weany tinny beats. I picked it up, turned it off - et voila! My HD magically recovered.
(christ, that was long. sorry)

para we'll just take the money from the homeless gig and buy you whatever new hardware you need, kid ain't swift enough to figure out where the ducats would have gone and it'll be easy to blame the vagrants...
- paraselene0
haha. that's brilliant, nairn.
see, the universe loves you. it tricked you into backing up!
it's just so overwhelming, thinking of trying to build everything back up again, or, in the case of the pictures, just kiss the lot goodbye.
the software is what really kills me, though. a genius spent an entire afternoon completely kitting me out with everything. and now he's left the country! bah!

i like your style, snuggs.
