I was going to email, but I am wayyy to important to be bothered while i am busy being part of the problem.

Good design can make a bad band almost sound better. (see Ming Dynasty thread)

I'm almost inclined to agree

Design can cause robots to believe they have human emotions.

This statement is TRUE & FALSE because its a blanket statement. There are to many instances where design, and I'm not talking just graphic design here helps many in need.
• The frustration may be coming from you not being true to yourself and designing for the wrong reasons.
• I would never make it as a Rockstar. I hate the attention and the fans would piss me off.
• Don't let a profession dictate who you are, live life and help others as much as possible.

it's a game with no winners, where posturing and manipulation are the only things you need to be good at to succeed...
I suppose like much like rockstars...
haven't read the article though...

design is ngised backwards.
- mrdobolina0
this could be said about any profession.

"...posturing and manipulation are the only things you need to be good at to succeed..."
hear hear!!... you just took the words from my fingertips...
... in the end... it's business.
When you think about it - the Oscars aren't public opinion - they're 'the academy' (aka... peers in the Industry) who give out the awards... just like Grammy's.... and ... oh shit!! Don't get me started on Journalism!!! Wheee!! Yay!! A pulitzer must mean the writer is very gifted...
... at least... in the eyes of 'his/her' peers... but not the 'general public'...
... which is where we all reside as designers... we solve 'visual problems'... what we 'do' isn't exactly ground-breaking... except to our peers (and ourselves)...
... to quote Dirty Harry:
"You're a legend in your own mind."

whoa, just read it...
spot on actually, I see this around me all the time and haven't seen much to the contrary in real life during my limited tenure, a humble 8 years, only fables on the internets, sound bites, 'inspirational' snippits and clever editing...

I consider what i do "communication and problem solving" and I can execute what needs to be done. That's it. Unfortunately the results are subjective.

it's a shame that it wasn't written better...

I wish that when people are talking about graphic design/marketing industry they would say 'graphic design' or something...not just 'design'.
I dont need to begin to explain how good design (in general) is not just nice, its essential for the good of mankind.. do I?

"People can live without design".
That is untrue.
"People don't care if it's Helvetica or Arial"
This is true, and I agree, but that's like saying people don't care if it's A4 or Letter. It doesn't matter that people don't care, nobody I know of claims that a typeface can save the world.
"We, designers, care more about our egos than our actual jobs"
You cannot say that, how is it that you can make a statement like that about all designers, that's just silly and not true.
To "change the world" you have to change peoples' perceptions and thoughts towards that world. Not just "fill somebodies belly". It's a bigger issue, mate.
I'm with you on the anti-inbred design world attitude, I'm 1000% for it, but you're killing yourself by dressing your thoughts up in some paradoxical rant that looks like a "turning of the times" thing. THAT, my friend, is ego
- BUISNESS0
and to those people that equate success with awards (read previous....)...get real

"People can live without design".
true
"people can live without food and water"
not true

I once turned shit into shinola, though....

You had some interesting feedbakc. Im a yougn designer, In the industry for about a year or so. And I believe that what we do CAN change the world. We understand communication alot better than the clients who ask for our services-That's why they come to us..
Will they tall the difference between helvetica and arial? Propbably not.
But I do believe that as designers it is not only our job to communicate, but to teach others a way of communication they have never seen before. And as people are taught, the way we all think, speak, and picture one another will hopefully one day change into something REAL and without bull*.
It a blessing and a curse sometimes-but I LOVE what I do. But, its also business.
Is a person that knows something another person doesnt better? I think not.
We are teachers-Sometimes unappreciated teachers, but teachers none the less.

everything is "designed" no matter what the argument is. everyone is a "designer" in some sense of the word, no matter who they are.
//i did read the article
i will read the article though!

a blanket statement with a lot of truth. I personally feel really lucky to get to do what I love. Last year I nearly quit design because I was so frustrated with advertising design. Now I design health-related educational interfaces that help people; so I don't believe that what I do doesn't mean anything.
Also, designers get no credit unless they do something really terrible...maybe the difference between helvetica and arial is subtle but still relevant in our enjoyment of life. Sometimes it really is the little things.
