a blanket statement with a lot of truth. I personally feel really lucky to get to do what I love. Last year I nearly quit design because I was so frustrated with advertising design. Now I design health-related educational interfaces that help people; so I don't believe that what I do doesn't mean anything.
Also, designers get no credit unless they do something really terrible...maybe the difference between helvetica and arial is subtle but still relevant in our enjoyment of life. Sometimes it really is the little things.
