whats the difference?
do some marketing agencies lable themselves as a design agency and visa versa?

marketing agencies watch over design agencies to make sure the clients message is being portrayed properly.

in marketing there is strategy involved before, during, and after - design is just a piece of the service.

Well, i guess design is a part of marketing. marketing is the sell, and design is part of that sell. design brings brand affinity through web, packaging etc... marketing could be anything from banks who have those stupid "wind booths" that blow arounde money. You know, the "come on in and win a chance to grab $10000!". Thats not design, but it is marketing and it def works.
i much prefer the design side. like building lifestage connections through design is fun.
i do not like selling cars = marketing, or just one form of.

if you want to be successful it seems that you have to use both skills, design and marketing.

marketing became the mutant byproduct of being a designer. for me.
- lowimpakt0
not the same. subsets of one and the other.
- t_rock0
did you just say, "lifestage connections?" hahaha.

Sorry, but yall are sort of bastardizing design. Design is about a bigger idea, thinking something through inside and out & doing what's intelligent. At a design shop, consideration to marketing should be a smaller part of the larger issue. We're not just people who make stuff pretty, no matter what a marketing agency wants their clients to think. IMO straight marketing agencies are bullshit.

(Aug 22 06, 10:25)unfortunately the opposite is often true.

well, what is a client thinking then goign to a design shop. Dont they want to make money with their collateral/sites?
- dobisf10
huh?

there's loads of great 'design' agencies feautured on newstoday.
Are there any famous (or infamous) marketing agencies?

I think this line gets blurred a lot.
Marketing agencies are more account based, deal more with long term strategy and positioning and try to influence all the customer channels.
Design firms are more project based and are more specialized, sometimes having their own style which is sought after. A lot of times design firms are hired by marketing firms to produce work. A good example of this is how Goodby Silverstein works with Kurt Noble.

Goodby is an ad agency though, which is different than a marketing agency. I'm an art director at an ad agency and there is a lot of collaboration that goes on in everything we do.
It just seems to me that a design firm should fully understand the brand and the deliverables should be brought about by stategic thinking by designers. To have a marketing firm determine what should be produced is taking one step of the creative process away from us.

agreed dob. But a majority of the time ad agencies are not properly aligned nor care to be with the brands needs outside of Print, TV, Web and OOH. therefore marketing agencies exsist.

Lets get real here guys... I am a former designer that has jumped into the marketing world and they are very, very, very different beast!
Marketing strategy = Product, Placement, Pricing, Promotion.
Design is important but small aspect of all the above.

I work for a web marketing company and we see design and marketing as the same thing. We constantly design sites with marketing in mind. Our SEM team does a great job of voicing concerns for marketing, so much so that it has become a religion here http://www.schipul.com/ I think you have to think both ways. I don't see a difference
- dobisf10
Well, in short, sum up what it is that you guys do.
I've always felt that the work of marketing agencies should be better suited elsewhere (ad agency, design shop, or in-house), but maybe I'm wrong.

marketeers are bloody cunts.
