my "marketing agency" concentrates on events, strategy, and execution. Design is a part of that.
We have our events that we own and we have events that we execute for our clients.
We also do Branding as well (because we brand our own events, we get those calls as well)
In short about 80% of our "Marketing" is 1 to 1 which most can be considered grass roots - where ad agencies mostly concentrate on 1 to many.
I got into this because in short I want to be my own client - I am 20% of the way there. Not so much the traditional marketing model, but "marketing" none the less.

granted most marketers are frustrated people who cant make it as a creative - but dont lump those people in with the ones who work in both diciplines.

Design is important but small aspect of all the above.

(Aug 22 06, 13:03)I strongly disagree. It's usually treated that way, and that's why many designers' abilities are used only in a handicapped fashion to arrive at a sterilized solution...but it shouldn't be that way.
A great designer understands and can drive strategy. However, so many of us have gotten lazy/whiny and get bogged down in the details, so clients and marketeers start to see us as little more than wallpaper hangers. Pawns for making things look Pretty.
I work at a design firm, and our clients solicit us to not only design but help steer their strategy. Visual thinkers should be in charge of visual marketing tools. It's that simple.
And for the record I think marketing is a dirty word. Makes me think of a dusty fruit stand in Calcutta. All the jargon that flies around about demographics, audiences, and branding misses the mark 90% of the time. I've found that when I communicate to individuals instead of groups, people actually connect with the 'brand' I'm designing for.

design studio + marketing firm = ad agency

a huge part of marketing is researching a particular market.
media placement, product launches, competition, etc..
- Seff0
another part is measuring the results

marketers stunt design and ultimately the final outcome because they have an inflated sense on entitlement. the reason they get to this is because the overlords don't dare understand what the creative arm does. apple is the only large company I can name that goes against the grain. their design dept works with the top guys. the lack of a middle man has paid off for them.

(Aug 22 06, 18:15)How closely do you suppose apple's marketing team works with chiat?
- Seff0
well, there are a few design oriented disciplines out there that appreciate the creative arm. Most notably from expreience are the architecture, interior design and furniture design industries. Given, they are not a mass consumer industry.. Not the Rooms to Go market.. More geared to the high end... people that pay people with tasted to do up their homes kinda shit..

not familiar with chiat

design is a much more noble cause than marketing. please stop treating it like its just 'part of the sell'.
I think you need to zoom out a bit and see how the area of design you are talking about relates to other disciplines of design (i.e architecture, product). Just because a marketing firm (or even lots of marketing firms) might see design as a small part of its business, it doesnt mean marketing is more important than design... it just means there's work to be done to fix the situation... or something...

1984 etc.
The thing about apple is that they didn't plan on making design the core of their products. It just happened when jonathan ive came in and rocked the imac. they figured they were onto something so now he's a high man on the totem pole. I rambling...
But one question: How does market research go about getting their numbers and info?
- uberdesigner_0
forget it. retarded question.
