1. Ditch the orange, unless it's knocking out of a dark color. Otherwise, it will disappear if this is ever faxed to anyone.
2. It feels a bit stair-steppy on the first version. The layout is a valiant effort but is currently more distracting than informative. I'd try to come up with a more top-to-bottom grid instead of the current triangular thing.
3. Get rid of the Activities. Irrelevant.
4. Beef up the experience, as long as there aren't any straight-up lies. Looks pretty thin right now...I know this is a student resume, but I still think you should elaborate a bit more.
5. Separate the sections a bit more. right now it all runs together in one huge chunk on the vertical version. add more leading between your sections.

full colour resumes bad idea...no one will print it...unless you print them and send them even if you send them a PDF they will print it and you will look dumb.

an accent color is fine if it prints out decently on a desktop printer and still shows up when faxed.
My resume has dark gray type and an area of orange knocked out of dark gray. Never had any issues with printing or faxing. Just don't get too crazy with color. Focus on your typography.

if you want the name to be vertical on the left-hand side, it should read bottom-up instead of top-down. It's harder to read as is.

the whole page is a light yellowish colour there gramme so yes it is a bad use of colour.

I actually work at a landscape architecture firm in their graphics department, and trust me, from what you have so far, she'll be a top contender (in terms of layout...not too sure about her skills though).
My advice would be to try making her name horizontal. And I know it's obvious, but have you tried using a nice shade of green as an accent color?

(Jul 18 06, 13:23)obviously true, unless he's trying to simulate a paper color. That's the only reason I can think of for having a bled light solid like that.

I feel like the vertical name should stay top down because of the square

(Jul 18 06, 14:04)good point...maybe it just isn't working then IMO, or perhaps it's about 30% too big and is eating up real estate...

yeah it needs a bit of work before prospective clients love koch

in addition to the other comments,
the initials in the square look off. i'd reduce their size a bit.is there such a thing as a vAcademic scholarship? (i went to a trade school) or is that a type-o?

so the client hes sending the resume to should stock that paper colour???

Like others have said...resume should be grayscale only!!
You never know who's going to copy/print/fax it to who.
I have told this story on here before...but after working really hard on a nice color resume, the HR lady made a photocopy to hand to the CD when I went in to interview with him. It looked like shite! Very unprofessional on my part!

(Jul 18 06, 14:30)Maybe she wants a cream-colored paper and wanted to get an idea of how the the color would affect the page.
I did the exact same thing when working on our wedding invitations, the paper I spec'd is a light green, so I put a light green solid on the page when showing it to the in-laws.
savvy??? I'm not saying it's a good idea what he does there, I'm just saying that could have been the reasoning.
Either way, it's hard to go wrong with a simple, bright white sheet for a resume.

Take the "bachelor of landscape architecture" out of anything to do with his name.
Why isn't it where the Education section is?
Activities section, as someone said, is pointless, unless he can put "schlepped manure for professional landscaper during the summer"

Thanks for the help!

like i said he's spec'ing his resume like the client has that kinda paper which they wont, which is completely different then your wedding invite since you are the one printing and deciding the colours, he knows the resume is going to be printed on white paper make it for white paper im just saying its common sense...savvy?!
- nebrow0

Think of your resume as strictly type and layout. You have to really flex your skills in those two areas. The color issue has been discussed at length—I personally never design a resume using color. B/W only. I have a PDF of resume examples I reference (or used to). Resume's I deem of a certain quality. E-mail me—if you want I'll send it to you.
