Running?

I'm in the beginnings of a full swing "get my body into shape" phase that I hope will last a lifetime.
Knowing the benefits of running, I've bought some new shoes and am ready to develop a routine that will help me burn off this gut and achieve abdominal nirvana (meaning Brad Pitt abs, obviously).
Do any of you run? Have any suggestions for me to get a routine going considering I really don't do any excercise right now? How should I start out distance-wise and increase over time?
I'm hoping that by the time I'm 35 I'm ready to compete alongside the cars in the Indy 500.

i run. I prefer treadmill though.
if your just starting just do alittle then increase no point going all out all at once. I haven't run in a few weeks though.

hiten - On my subway route to and from work, there's a three story apartment building right by the tracks with a treadmill on the roof. Litererally 15 feet away from the subway cars and parallel to them.
I've never seen anyone running on it, but I'm hoping that day will come. It would just crack me up.

I took an online quiz last week and one of the questions was, "Can you run a mile without stopping?"
I answered Yes, though I've done no physical activity since about October. So yesterday I decided to hit the gym up and got on the treadmill to do a mile.
I started at 8.5mph, at an incline of 4 and 2/10ths of the way in checked my heart rate which was a booming 67 bpm (sarcasm).
So I upped it to 9.5mph and max incline of 6 for the rest of the way ... at 9/10ths of a mile I decided hrm, maybe I'll see if my heart still thinks I'm laying down on the couch.
I put my hands the reader and * ZAP * a huge spark flew up, the treadmill immediately stopped and I ran rite into the front thing ... I was laughing hysterically because I'm insane I think and I look over and every single treadmill that was on the same power line was stopped with people staring at me.
I felt like a superhero who was just experiencing his powers for the first time... the power of static-electricity.
So I walked away attempting to zap some more stuff to no avail.
The point of this story is if you want to be a super-hero like me, start running.

Took me a long time to get into running at the gym, start easy and build up to a reasonable pace otherwise you'll suffer so badly you'll be put off in a few outings.
You might think you're not achieving much initially but if you're not in great shape or out of practice then start slowly and build up to a reasonable run/distance.

i used to run, but it's really hard on the knees. but basically, i'd do short runs (2-5 miles) monday, wednesday, and friday, and a long run (5-10 miles) saturdays.
but... now i swim and cycle. swimming is the best low-impact, all body workout. and cycling is just fun! i'm way more fit now than i was when i just ran.

post pictures of ferocious dogs all over your house and imagine them occasionally escaping the boundary of the print and taking after you in an attempt to drink your blood and chew your flesh.
or get fun house fat mirrors installed ..

I'm going to be running outside, btw. I only live about a half mile from Lake Michigan and the jogging, biking path.
Who knows, I may hate it and melt these new shoes down for scrap. I'm sure not going to casually wear white sneakers.

running on a treadmill really fucks up my knees. so i changed to bycycle. it's better for my knees.

I've got a mountain bike too and def. enjoy biking more. Used to ride 175 miles a week back in 9th grade when I was racing road bikes and training all the time. I'll NEVER be in shape like that again.
Biking is just kind of tough in the city. I'd love a road bike and wide open spaces to ride in, but the lake path gets so packed with people walking and biking and running and rollerblading that it's kind of a death trap sometimes.

treadmills are good excercise, and good for winter, but not the same as running.
but yeah, gradual is good. most running magazines have training schedules. Train to run a 5 or 10 k - it gives you a goal and a deadline. Running a race with hundreds of people alongside you is a pretty cool experience. But also, humbling, as people pass you as they are pushing stroller.

i run....try to to get out atleast 3 times a week and about 30-40 minutes at about 75 procent of my maximum heart rate.

msg33 : i have a training schedule that starts you out at 2 miles and ramps up to about 6 or 7. The goal was more first 10k/11k.
i'll send it to your email.
for me, i ran for about 6 months until i hit the barrier of running above 10 miles. my goal was to run in the Seattle Half Marathon, but I never made it. I did, however, do a 11k halfway around Crater Lake at a really high elevation of 5k. that felt good.
but i also stopped 'cause of the frequent injuries. i ride fixed now which one helluva workout and do the occasional weekend run here or there.
hope this helps.

running should be reserved for moments of life and death or missed appointments. much too hard on your joints/bones/tendons.

Running doesn't work for everyone though. For example, it doesn't really work for me because I have asthma. So I do other stuff, like walking a lot, or doing short bursts of activities/sports.

I just started running with friends, which is good. because everytime I started by myself I'd stop after 2 weeks.
It really kicked my ass, totally different muscles than bike riding. I think they're good in combination, biking and running.

I started at 5-10 minutes run with not much resistance (3/10 on resistance) on the eliptical
over the past couple of weeks
I gradually moved up to 35 minute runs at resistance of 7/10thats a good sweat
