i'd really love to go to san fransisco to work for a couple of years as a graphic designer... but i'm british (living in edinburgh at the moment).
is there any chance of me getting a visa?
assume my portfolio is good (although only 2 years studio experience).

krust,
my answer here will be 2-fold;
1. it is tough to obtain work visas in the US now as new terrorist laws clamped down by the empire's demands have really cut a lot out of the loop. that said, a company sponsoring you is a huge plus. that, and the fact you are a UK citizen is in your favor.
2. because there are many, many US peeps on this site and those w/ hiring/firing abilities, i would suggest having your portfolio either a) correctly listed, or b) correctly working when you say "assume my portfolio is good". it says a lot (for better or worse) about the experience bit you mention.
SF is great though and lived there for a bunch. good luck with the search. :)

Its not that good.

cheers. i'm currently re-designing a website portfolio. just wanted some clarity on the subject (which you've given! - thanks)
i've got a couple of mates in SF and went to visit for a couple of weeks - loved it.

it's really hard obtaining a US visa.. companies in the states don't usualy bother because it such a long process (around 3 months).
But if your really good then its worth the wait.Next best thing... Canada ....anyone under the age of 35 in the Uk can get a one year work visa. for Canada.
Or .... Marry a US Chick like Jevad. Or pay to marry a lesbian.
Or... Enter the US greencard lottery.
Cant think of anything else?
:)

*US greencard lottery.*
enlighten me! (i'm a bit dim)

(Feb 2 06, 05:38)haha. i was talking to skt. i thought you had taken your site down cos of what he said.
for some reason it's a right pain for us yanks to get permits to work here and vice-versa. i don't really know how it works the other way round, but good luck!
- krust0
i'm kinda married already!
so other broads and lesbians are out!so i'm thinking it's unlikely?
my other chance would be...
a friend is opening a bar in SF soon, she'd be willing to sponsor my wife to work there. i'd get one automatically then right?

it's a no hassle situation for you to come to the US and even work if you are in the EU.

jazx are you drunk again?

(Feb 2 06, 05:52)come again!!!???
I have tried with my danish and canadian citizenship, no fucking luck. maybe the icelandic one will work.. haven't tried that yet

You're doing it all wrong. You come over, with your passport, no need for Visa if you are in the EU. Go out and find the work yourself. But don't come over here with no money to support yourself, thinking you will find something right away. Most employers will even pay you under the table if you are talented enough. I see it all the time.
I know I would if I owned a company and I'm not drunk, I've just lived in a few countries and spoken to enough foreigners. I went through the same thing in Finland, vice versa.

you cannot get a visa once you are in the us i don't think. i know that you certainly cannot do it that way here. you have to either come with the work permit in hand or come over, find a job, go back to the states, apply for the visa and then come over again. if you do it the way that you are suggesting, jaz and work under the table, you can get deported. i've been deported before and it's not nice. it can fuck up the rest of your life. in the us the penalty that goes with deportation is that you are illegal even to enter the us for ten years and, in certain cases, jail time. for some people that is an unacceptable risk.

(Feb 2 06, 06:08)yeah tell that to about 1 million or so people living in one major town in the USA, maybe you're heard of it?
New York City.
lol, you can easily do it, we don't care that much. I know an INS agent. you only get caught if you're a dumb@ss.
You sprecha Ingly?
- ********0
Bottomline, get your @ss over here and get your work out there and apply for jobs, even if you don't have a work permit. If you're talented enough, they will hire you and figure out the details later.
Most small companies will apply for a work permit for you if they want to retain your skills. Most companies have legal representation.
Plenty of UK ex-pats I have worked with that have done the same thing.

so Jaz you are advising him to enter the US as an illegal immigrant and hide from the authorities for a while.
do you ever hear yourself speak and just think "holy fuck, actually, i'm a complete tool!" ?
