I have a pal who was deported from the US twice in the space of 3 years.
The first time it took 2 weeks for the guys in black shades to find him and cart him away from the town of MacLean near DC. Second time he got to the airport before being marched back onto the next plane past Richard Dreyfuss of Stakeout fame and his lovely wife.
true.
(all because me and him got caught with the combined total of 4 joints worth of dope when we were 16)

so Jaz you are advising him to enter the US as an illegal immigrant and hide from the authorities for a while.
do you ever hear yourself speak and just think "holy fuck, actually, i'm a complete tool!" ?

i'm an alien, i'm an illegal alien, i'm an englishman in San Fran..!*i really dont fancy the risk guys, i have a wife and 2 cats that would be coming with me... the pussys are kinda nippy, but me and the mrs would have trouble hiding in the cupboard.
i'll just apply and wait and see.

Are you going to tell on me?
- kelpie0
sensible option. Dreyfuss would approve.

That last question was at jaz by the way.

(Feb 2 06, 06:22)yup - though the real beef may have been with him blatantly telling porkys all over his visa forms, then totaly not having one the 2nd time :/

those people you are talking about, jaz, are oftentimes phds in nuclear physics who end up having to drive cabs for a living and get shot on runs to queens (true: happened to a friend's father from the ukraine).
designers who turn up in san francisco without papers and expect to get paid under the table will most certainly find work. they can become bicycle messengers or waiters or play in a klezmer band at barmitzvahs. i really don't think you know what you're talking about.
krust, just do the research online, apply for jobs from overseas (that's what i did, and it worked just fine - if the employer wants you, they'll sponsor you), sign up for the lottery, network with companies here that might have branches or affiliates there, etc. madirish's advice seems really sound, too. best of luck.

it used to be a lot easier than it is now. best option is get work with a big company who will throw lots of mullah at it to push it through.
the whole come over, get a job and worry about it after, ended around 9/11 unfortunately.
As for going out with your spouse working in a bar, only she will be able to work (unless she is american). You will be given leave to stay but not earn cash.
Best thing is to get a job before hand and get them to sort it.
Oh yeah if you are english you aren't allowed in the visa lottery? gawd knows why...

There three legal ways you can do it:
1. have a a company sponsor you (they'll need to want to hite you) and come using a h1 (academic) visa (must have a ba or 12 years of experience)
takes bet. 3-5 months to get the visa + 2 weeks for social security.2. have a a company sponsor you (they'll need to want to hite you) and come using an o1 (outstanding achievment) visa (must show proof of awards, publications, etc.) 3-5 months to get the visa + 2 weeks for social security.
3. get an outstanding achievment greencard (must show proof of awards, publications, etc.) takes about 2 years.
in all cases you should probably take into account a layer to help you file with a fee of 5k$—if a company wants you enough, they'll pay for it.
your spouse does get permission to live in the US, but not work. if you get a greencard—you can start working on a permit for your spouse.
I wouldn't recommend working without a permit. you can get arrested, deported and banned—and it's not as rare as you may think.

(Feb 2 06, 06:24)Hmmm, I lied about my criminal record on entering the states last time thinking they wouldn't check. They obviously didn't, although I was just going for a holiday.

i meant hire and lawyer not hite and layer...
