The ignorance of it all

I'm finally calming down after being completely enraged from this conversation I overheard nearby. I couldn't do anything since it involved several high-ups and company owners. The gist is that the IT guy here is Indian and a Hindu. He just spent the past week moving his family into a new home. One of these other people went to drop something off to him when he wasn't home. On their door, they had placed a golden hindu swastika, an ancient symbol within many faiths, often representing a home blessing of sorts. He was confused, and thought it was a Nazi swastika. So he's now telling this story, and every in the room is horrified, and saying that they should tell him to take it down, oh my god what will neighbors think, he's not going to make many friends in the neighborhood, and so on. Out of fear and ignorance, they were actually going to tell a man to remove an ancient symbol of his faith from his OWN F*ING HOME! And this was a room full of Jews!! Historically persecuted much?! I couldn't believe my ears. I was so angry I was shaking and had to go away into the bathroom.
Ok...I am a calm tree. My branches blow gently in the wind.

Why didn't you just correct them? You cant blame the ignorant if you're not gonna share the truth.

moth-
They knew the truth when someone there mentioned it, they did not care. Their perception was since the rest of the world wouldn't see it that way, and to them as Jews it still represented Nazi-ism, he should remove it.Kind of hard to march in uninvited and start correcting the people who emply you by calling them ignorant.

i think both sides need ot be sensitive to each others beliefs and feelings and communicate about it

(Jan 30 06, 07:40)In the grander scheme I absolutley agree with you tehgee.
In this particular, I find it so wildly inappropriate, offensive, and dare I say, un-f*ing-American to tell a man to remove an important symbol of faith from his own home, based on one's unfounded assumption of what others may think based on ignorance.

I mean, if it isnt one his office door, how can anyone say anything about it?
Tell them all to fuck off.

hopefully after 100+ years this symbol will be known for having MULTIPLE meanings by all to whom this symbol signifies something.
This symbol is more than just a symbol of hatred and more than a symbol of the universe coming from a single point... but it is confusing none-the-less.
- mrdobolina0
So they know that there are different meanings to the symbol and still want him to take it down?
Sounds irrational to me.

I sincerely doubt the swastika will be thought of as anything other than a Nazi moniker for a lot longer than 100 yrs.
Isn't there some sort of religious persecution big brother style office/HQ in America you could report this to?

they should mind their own business and so should you

I think you should tell the new IT guy there's a nazi-themed fancy dress day coming up at work, then come in that day with a video camera..
- ethios0
Why did Hitler use it for his own means? I myself am ignorant...

(Jan 30 06, 07:55)Not be more of an ass than I already am, but that's the kind of mentality that let the Nazis gain so much power in Germany..

This was a great opportunity for you to step up and illuminate someone's perceptions. You're so angry and venting here yet you said nothing there where it counted.
Ignorance exists. Personally, I think it's good that they were talking about their (mis)perceptions openly, rather than hiding their prejudices. The only way bigotry and racism will ever be diminished is if we are not afraid to talk about it. You missed a golden opportunity.

(Jan 30 06, 07:55)Actually kiddo, I did mind my own business. It would have been inappropriate of me to intervene as I was not part of the conversation. But if you think being totally compacent and ignoring this kind of shit and not sharing your experience is the way to go, then sleep on.
