Odds on bets that poeple will be emailing Jo Wiley at Radio 1(UK) asking her "what the song for the new Apple ad is" and they (the postal seervice) will re-release the track maing a shite-loada money.
I'll keep you posted

I agree that the ad has got *us* (designers) talking about it. However, i feel that in the last few years apple has been trending away from marketing at us and tried to branch out and grab more of the "average" user. may be it is premeditated that we'll sit on NT all day and on other sites talking about the ad... but i still have my doubts.

Yeah dancer, but is that a PS song on the Intel ad? If it is i don't recognize it.... that would have been a little better

Apple does have to make money, they can't just sell MACS to the design industry, thgey have to branch out.
Which ads are you talking about?
I think the iPod ad campaign was fantastic.

Guess I have been caught out. I haven't watched the ad as I don't have the means here.
It will still get everyone talking about them though...

the ad is multi levelled, on the base level for the mainstream, it is a highly polished ad that delivers the image and message that apple want, it is stylish, sharp and informative. This is getting the message to the mainstream that do not trawl mac forums or even know much about computers. You have the Intel people in their suits, that reaffirms Intel's positioning within the product, this strengthens the value of Intels worth and thus the new intel mac product, it also introduces PC users into the new market of macs, now they are on common ground. By refereencing/collaborating with the postal service video, they are now also reaffirming their strong links to music, and are tapping into muso types that will either enjoy this link or generate additional publicity by whining on forums, talking to their friends etc. The linking between the music video and the ad and also the THX styling also taps into the cult of mac idea and generates buzz within so called opinion former/early adopter channels, whether you think this is negative because the discourse may fall into (as here) negative, Apple is a strong enough brand to withstand and overcome this and still come out further on top, and a side result has been a massive amount of coverage they didn't pay for. The increased buz for the Postal Service means that they can sell more records or MP3's, which can be bought via err ... iTunes.

Rasko... Well said...
I have to say that i agree with many of the points that you made. in fact i wasn't necessarily dismissing the ad out of hand... i mean, it is pretty to look at and it conveys the message effectively. by many definitions, that is a successful ad.
My main point is that there is no transparency. I find that not knowing if it's a rip, a collaboration or what leaves a bad taste in my mouth... is it viral marketing or a lazy ass art director? who can tell at this point? Again, you stated your case very effectively, but unless you have ties that i am unaware of, at this time it's pure conjecture. And that's totally cool. In fact i'm enjoying this discussion, so please don't miss read my intent... but that we are discussing this with something of a negative bent makes me wonder how we got here, but accident or by design?
- rasko40
true, and you are right, this is purely my opinion and I could be completely wrong, it could have been an underhanded rip but I just think that wouldn't happen for such a big launch campaign.

I cant stand Postal Service. Why couldn't Ian McKaye be Apple's spokesperson - he thought different..

Cool... so that was fun and i did no work for like the last hour... so hope you all have a good day

Steve Jobs can do no wrong, and I don't want to hear another word about it. Ever.

They both owe a greater debt to Lucas and Kubrick.

to think this is sloppy or stealthy plagiarism is naive, it's more referential and 'in the know'. Apple make the biggest selling mp3 player and sell millions of tracks through itunes, this 'biting' is intentional and creates buz among mtv weasles that think to gain respect from their spotty peers by posting it on their site and whinging on forums - more coverage, more word of mouth - job done.
