the ad is multi levelled, on the base level for the mainstream, it is a highly polished ad that delivers the image and message that apple want, it is stylish, sharp and informative. This is getting the message to the mainstream that do not trawl mac forums or even know much about computers. You have the Intel people in their suits, that reaffirms Intel's positioning within the product, this strengthens the value of Intels worth and thus the new intel mac product, it also introduces PC users into the new market of macs, now they are on common ground. By refereencing/collaborating with the postal service video, they are now also reaffirming their strong links to music, and are tapping into muso types that will either enjoy this link or generate additional publicity by whining on forums, talking to their friends etc. The linking between the music video and the ad and also the THX styling also taps into the cult of mac idea and generates buzz within so called opinion former/early adopter channels, whether you think this is negative because the discourse may fall into (as here) negative, Apple is a strong enough brand to withstand and overcome this and still come out further on top, and a side result has been a massive amount of coverage they didn't pay for. The increased buz for the Postal Service means that they can sell more records or MP3's, which can be bought via err ... iTunes.
