How am I hypocritical, Wolfboy? My comments were based on the information provided in the overview of the program. I made that clear.

I think network marketing (mulit-level marketing) is the root of all evil.

haha, lots of emotions and spiritual elements to these types of discussions... I tend to forget that.

i'd have to agree, chaztoo. Paris Hilton fits into the equation somehow, as well.

hahha, exactly isn't NT great. Say something that disagrees with the popular opinion and watch people turn as shady as a back-alley abortionist

There's no question that "religion" has committed atrocities in the past and does so today.
Dawkins just needs to take a good look at his belief system and what it has been responsible for. I say this based on having read much of his writings, not the chanel 4 program.

The dirty deed will be done dirt cheap, JazX...

Not true, skt. I'm not blind to other possibilities, I just haven't found an explanation that better fits the evidence. Don't hate me for that.
It's amazing how hateful people get when somebody shares an opposing viewpoint.

(Jan 10 06, 06:12)Where is the hate?
And the evidience suggests a christian god over any of the thousands of other gods? This is a massive undertaking to have studied all of this and concluded that, yes indeed, the christian god is the one true god.
Once you reached this conclusion after (sorry, how many years did you study this, shall we just call it x?) years you decided to become a christian.
Ah, but here is my problem with you and your "evidence". You had absolute faith in a christian god before you studied all of the worlds gods throughout history.
And you didn't even do that did you? You read literature by other "scientists" who also have absolute faith in a christian god.
My conclusion. Pish. Total and utter pish.

It is entirely misleading and false to claim the despotic regimes of the 20th century that were inspired by Marxist economic theory was done explicitly in the name of either a) atheism or b) materialism. Quite obviously you do not know the history of these states you refer to, or the nature of their revolutions and counter revolutions.
It could be just as easy for a dishonest Christian, like yourself, to say that the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, who died at the hands of European Imperialism – also died due to an atheistic materialistic philosophy – that of Capitalism. However you would never allude to that as an example since the perpetrators of European imperialism were often deeply religious, Christian men.
What happened in those countries you speak of, more often than not, was a disenfranchised class overthrowing established elite institutions. Due to the certain conditions of these states, they more often than not, descended into despotism and terror. This has happened throughout human history for completely non-religious reasons – from the French revolution, to the wars of Independence across the world – including those inspired by Communism in South America, that were markedly less bloody than their conservative counterparts (i.e Pinochet etc.).
What happened in Russia, for example, was not in the name of “non-God”, but rather a reaction (initially) against a corrupt tyrannical Czarist regime which spread it’s terror in collusion with the Church. When the Soviet’s attacked the Church, they were attacking an enshrined elite institutional network in Russian society, that was wholly corrupt and was a tool for spreading Czarist despotism.
Human beings go to war for many reasons. Religion is one of them. Wealth, power, and the redistribution of finite resources is another. One of the causes requires the belief in a supernatural deity. The other does not. However it is wholly misleading to claim that the desire to spread “atheism” in any way shape or form is, by default the cause of wars/atrocities committed in the name of simply the distribution of power. Though the Marxists were by and large atheists, their revolutions were CLASS revolutions. Revolutions precipitated by economic pressures. It is interesting to note, that the most devout Communists and Leftists in Iran, were the followers of Ayatolla Khomeini. It is also interesting to note, the long history of support giving to the anarchistas, and the Communists of Spain, by the Spanish clergy.

skt, I have concluded that the full body of evidence would point towards the God of the Bible. There are legitimate reasons for this. After one concludes that there is a God, the second question should be: "Has this God revealed himself?". I found the answer to be a resounding "yes" and I found that history demonstrates that Christianity alone stands up under scrutiny. Not the religious medieval caricature that many are fed in universities, but, Biblical Christianity. Some of the reasons for this conclusion:
1. The reliability and uncanny preservation of the Biblical manuscripts which all harmonize and date back to the apostolic era.
2. The historical evidence for the resurrection of Christ.
3. The unique claims of Christ and the gospel message - such that it could not have been devised by performance-oriented humans.
Those are some of the reasons. Basically, I concluded that Christianity cannot properly be lumped into the pail of "world religions", for these reasons and more. The world religions i've looked at communicated a performance oriented religiosity which appeals to human nature and smacks of human invention. The message of Christ stands in stark contrast... I found.

what we witness nowadays is the last attempts of survival of a primitive mindset.
follow the man that creates fire.
not the one who fears it.

(Jan 10 06, 06:15Not sure, I only read a couple of lines of your post and assumed the content of the rest based on my experience of Christians and the outdated dogma that holds their faith in place.

Hardly misleading at all, Kuzz. Nazi and communist regimes have a world view rooted in the Atheistic Materialism of Marx, ultimately Neitzche. To deny that the millions of people exterminated because of an underpinning world view which denied their worth and purpose, is absurd and is your attempt to revise history. But you are clearly dishonest, so it's to be expected.
No one is denying that people died and that evils were committed under other ideologies, my point is that there has been numerous evils committed under an explicitly atheistic one. Try as you may, you cannot divorce Communism and Nazi ideologies from their Materialistic roots. Stop trying to revise history, Kuzz.
Nice copy and paste from an anti-christian site, though. ;)

Were you a faithful christian before you studied world religions? Were your teachers faithful christians?
Two simple questions. If you would be so kind as to answer them for me.
- flagellum0
For those who are honest and interested, simply research Stalin, Lenin, Mao, their underpinning world-views and then note the blood on their hands.

skt,
1. I studied world religions before becoming a Christian. I studied them in far greater depth after becoming a Christian.
2. I grew up in a secular public school and a functionally agnostic household.
