a brand isn't what you think you are, it's what others think you are....
read the brand gap like the previous post states, it's about an hour read and will clear everything up...

I'm on this mailing list and recently received this article. The author defines what he thinks a brand is, I would agree with his assessment:

Always liked this little description from the Logo Design Workbook.
Identity: The combination of the logo, visual system (typeface, colours, imagery), and editorial tone work together to form a unique cohesive message for a company, person, object, or idea.
Brand: The identity is not a brand. The brand is the perception formed by the audience about a company, person, or idea. This perception is the culmination of logo, visuals, identity program, messages, products, and actions. A designer cannot "make" a brand. Only the audience can do this. The designer forms the foundation of the message with the logo and identity system.

+1 NegativeSpace.
I've only been out of college about 4 years now after maoring in Advertising, but you made me feel like I'd just opened a book!
That is the perfect comparison to point out how people often confuse the two.

Brand is basically the After-Taste you get from a company, product, or service's advertising, function, style, or design..
basically..
brand is NOT a logo,
brand is NOT a name..
brand is NOT a slogan or theme songbrand is the "feeling" you get after experiencing a product, service, or identity
look at volvo..
their "brand" represents "safety" "sturdyness" "higher standards"hope this helps you...

Kind of like Saab and how it's brand is stuffy old wool wearing college professor who doesn't mind that basic repairs cost an insane amount of money.
Ha!

I've learnt from somewhere that a branding ad is successful when you can remove the logo and still recognize who it is from.
I hope to achieve that for myself some day.

But you mean take your face off and people still recognize you from your body?

Well if MC Hammer lost his face or something we'd still recognize him from his baggy pants and whacked out dance.
But I do digress.

Brand is a way to disguise quality with jargon.

In Dutch brand means fire. So I wouldn't touch it, if I were you ;-p
