Gramma - What I got from that article was that instead of blaming thier sales problems on a shitty redesign of an already shitty car - they are trying to pass the buck by saying the 'creative' has been bad and that's why they are losing market share.
I mean, they didn;t even give Arnold a review man - that's total BS....
Sounds like that new guy they brought on board from Mini has some friends at this new agency too....

worst cars ever made, got rid of mine last year.
In the shop 12 TIMES in one year and thousands down the drain in repairs. fuck em....

(Sep 7 05, 09:16)yeah i hear this all the time, but mostly from US.. are the models build there by lower industrial standards or something??
- jevad0
I think so Janne. Always hear about problems on VW's in the US - but not in Europe - I don't think I took my Golf GTI to the shop even once for a repair over 5 years!

vws are crap here.
almost everyone i know here who has them is having problems.
they used to be such a solid car.

the bora over here (germany) is seen as far from hip. it's for people that can't afford a passat, and passat's themselves are seen as a very conservative choice. the image of vw in germany is totally different then the usa. its a reliable, conservative choice. not hip at all - except for the new beetle which i believe was designed in california.
the mini is an incredibly big yuppie car. kind of like what the vw is like in the usa.
looks like mini is going to have to find a new agency because there is definitely a conflict of interest if vw is also in the same creative shop as mini.

most of VW cars are poorly made IMO.
i remember when my gf got her Beetle when it first came out. the dash ligths fried after a week. the buttons for window and climate controller fell off.
maybe its over seas manufacturing practice but i hear german made VWs are great.
just like any other company indeed. Honda who manufactures certain vehicles in Americas and others in japan. My hondas in the past has been made in japan and been great but ones made in others, have failed me consistantly

yeah, i heard that the specs and standards are way diff from that in europe.
The biggest prob was the electrical system.

i thought CP+B dropped Mini already..

"the bora over here (germany) is seen as far from hip. it's for people that can't afford a passat"
exactly!
same here in NL!

MrDinky, "Hand in hand" I am sure we agree. However, following your logic...
Do you suppose that Phillies Cigars back in the 90's knew even where to begin to look at the cause of their increasing sales? Do you think they knew that their sudden increase was due to Cypress Hill & House of Pain? The market picks up on a product fast and in waves.
I am in no way implying that a strong solid fresh campaign doesn't boost those sales, but I think that if VW had flown a campaign as strong as Mini during it's new Jetta launch their trust factor would have been shot if that hype did not meet the products design expectations.
Follow? We're kind of saying the same thing except I am wanting to pass a bit more of that weight blame onto the product. I do think Mini would have still been successful only since its being the smallest car on the market it was bound to find its niche.

(Sep 7 05, 09:21)i think its the same in Americas also. In recent campaigns, they are targeting the young professionals who are starting out. "all grown up sort of" this relates to the idea that you have rown up with VW so grow up with us and you are still hip and yopung with your corp job.
i am not sure if this message translates with the buyers.

I think dinky said it with the ads being recognizable, its a stale campaign. They should have done more work with evan hecox or like-minded artists.
allso, VW needs to re-release a new 21 window bus/camper and a small sports sedan.

Yeah but consumers are smarter than what we give them credit for. We all do research when it comes to purchasing big items. Unless you're super rich, no one will buy a car based on the ad campaign. Especially in this unstable economy.
they might be impressionable, but in the end it's the product that will sell itself.

"Yeah but consumers are smarter than what we give them credit for. "
well it depends on target audience.
you know, a bora/jetta is not something you buy at wallmart..
it's a critical group of people they are targeting i think.

Jk
yes i do agree with you. The product has to meet expectation of the image that it creates.
and you are absolutely right about the cigars and mini and its niche along with GTI / Golf / Civic market segment
And yes, even though i am a VW fan, over last 5 years, i see it as good design but not great design.

Interesting debate guys - thanks

one note, i am surprised that Ford hasnt dont any big move to change its brand image. they are producing very cool cars but nothing to support it

in regard to mini...
mini = bmw
bmw is one of the only car companies to increase sales and market share over the past few years. bmw is a premium luxury brand in the usa and in germany. the mini falls exactly in this category.over the past years i've worked for: bmw, mercedes-benz, audi and fiat. out of all of those companies bmw (also mini) actively using the internet and new communication channels. fiat was the absolute worst but i believe they'll to bankrupt soon.
- piperboytoy0
i suppose it depends on the audience.
My friend bought a vw beetle because it was so cute. Now she wants to torch it because it's the most expensive lemon she bought.
Now she's looking for a new car and will never buy a vw again!

the BK campaigns are getting a tad old.. I don't care about mini-sites, just make a good cheeseburger.
