it fixes everything. i haven't been doing enough this summer and as soon as i stopped i started having neck pain and could feel my sciatic nerves and all this crazy shit. like it had been fending off the ageing process for a few years. need to do more, more!

Attach your laptop to a USB keyboard and get a mouse. Working with a trackpad and typing on a laptop are bad for your posture and circulation.
I also used to sit on one of those giant exercise balls at work, you naturally stabilize yourself on it, keeping your posture correct or else you fall off. Was very good for the back and can be quite comfortable although tiring.

Imagine a world full of hunchbacks as technology progresses into smaller outputs.

i had a pretty bad skateboard fall when i was in 8th grade.. broke my collar bone, wrist and fucked up my back. i started to get scoliosis , tons of pain and had to turn shit around.
i've been doing stretches before i go to bed and doing a set for my back when i lift ever since and have been aok.

So weird seeing this topic - I had to go to the oesteopath this week cos for the first time in my life I stood up and I couldnt turn my neck - it just froze!
He cricked my back and I'm going back in 2 weeks to get a set of exercises but he said it is the posture, on the mac all day...etc
Plus we just got the cinema displays - how low are they? We've all put a box underneath to lift them - I think it was causing all of us major problems.
That and I slouch too..

haha love that site para!
i had a massage last week cos my back and neck were totally seized up, my masseur taught me some stretches and exercises that are helping heaps. he said all my back and neck muscles are weak from sitting at my desk all day. stretching is soooo good for you.

I had an extremely sore back once , was at my witch-doctor's house for dinner. So he noticed and told me to stand up. Then he lifted me off the ground by my head and I've never had a sore back since.

Tai Chi sorted out my back and posture. As well as sorting out all the aches and pains and my posture it teaches you simple stuff like walking from your hips rather than your shoulders, keeping your shoulders down and not around your ears, breathing through your diaphrapm etc. It's the best thing ever and it can be used as self defence too. It's the gift that keeps on giving!

Leftwave's advice of getting up every hour seems to be the answer. The other one would be to rememind yourself to keep your back straight every now & then when you're not at work - u 4get it when u're at work.

Plus, if your back is already sore, you can try sleeping without a pillow, or on a hard surface. A soft carpet for a night is perfect. Once I slept on a carpet for 2 months in Utah and was feeling great.

yo MLF, i have a similar story, but I started to notice my scoliosis problem when i was 14, before i started skating.
Can you give me some advice about stretching, etc.?

what happend was, i hit my hips really hard when i fell, and it just knocked shit out of wack. in xrays while i was standing straight up one hip was an inch higher than the other, causing my spine to start to go crazy.
i just do basic on the floor touching my toes (pointed and pulled back), lying on the floor and pulling my knees to my chest, shins on the floor bending so my forehead touches the floor and runner stretches (one leg out, the other bent, crossed over the other while you put your opposite arm over the bent leg)...
i think the frequency helps more than the specific stretching. it keeps my muscles pretty relaxed, especially when i'm sleeping so i don't wake up with pain.
lifiting wise, i do lat pulls and the other usual machines.. nothing out of the ordinary there either

I did Yoga for a few months. I'll probably start doing something active again once school starts up, but I do walk around for at least 20 minutes everyday. In the summer I do less, but that's usually because I'm working or doing other summer projects.

I think I am going to get a hunchback from staring at my laptop at work. Anyone here getting bad posture and if not what are you doing to prevent it?
