I'm totally digging the new pope and his visit to the United States. Some people in history have acted as pope, and others have actually *been* the pope and embodied completely the principles the pope should embody.
I imagine that for some true devotees, like Pope Francis himself appears to be, the opportunity to be pope enables them to take on a persona beyond what they would have otherwise been capable of. The current Dalai Lama too seems to fully embody the position he has taken.
The symbolism of the position allows the devoted individual to become something greater than what they are. The support and focus of their followers, their belief, is concentrated within the character of the leader. A good leader of faith can be a vessel for the hope and belief of their followers and become the incarnation of their hope and aspirations for what any person might be.
