wasn't white plains more expensive than new york according to that little most expensive cities survey?
i don't know if i would commute by car or train. depends on where i ended up. i'd rather do train [so i could sleep / read on train] but still have a car for general getting around purposes.
bronx = not gonna do.

well where in westchester are we talking?
- anzelina0
katonah.
- jdcomba0
lost me. dunno? move to spanish harlem! although if you live somewhere near grand central you could take the xpress.
- anzelina0
katonah is where i work, it's one stop above mount kisco.
taking the train is really no problem for me. i'd actually gain relaxing / reading time.
also i'm not going to stay in katonah forever, after living in the city 6 months or so i'm going to get a new job. perhaps then i will relocate.
who was it that was saying they commute to westchester from around 20th? on the west side and it takes them less than 40 minutes [by car]?

Studio in Hell's Kitchen.
Cool neighborhood, nothing great though and too expensive. Making the move to the LES in January.

actually reverse commute by car would be good. DOIT!
- dddc0
either dumbo
or park ave / 5th ave and the 40s
- jdcomba0
if youlived on the upper west side, you could drive to work, it would take under half hour

i think TheTick does the reverse commute. he's in my neighborhood.
i you wanna make the commute easy, then around grand central.. then just one train ride to westchester.

do not move to jersey unless you work in jersey, you will pay both nj tax and nyc tax if you live there and work in nyc.
buying an apt or house is by far the best move you can accomplish, dont be scared off by the !million dollar price tags, you can get a great mortgage and do like $50k and have a 30 yr mortgage...you may sell after a few years make back your lost cash or stay, either way its the way to go.
i know many people that hate queens, i personally dont care for it but i dont hate it.
but yes take time and visit each neighboorhood, get a feel living there. also make sure you have steady work!
:)

this fall i'm electing to go down to part time. i don't think that buying in nyc is an option for me right now.
perhaps in the backwoods of tennessee i could buy a house.

I'm trying to buy a place, but you need a 20% deposit unless you know otherwise.
- tkmeister0
not always 20% some properties allow 90% finance. it's better to put down more for the down payment but it's hard to do in manhattan with the price so high.
i am planning to buy in the next few years so i am saving now.

wow work part time and live in NYC!
