do not move to jersey unless you work in jersey, you will pay both nj tax and nyc tax if you live there and work in nyc.
buying an apt or house is by far the best move you can accomplish, dont be scared off by the !million dollar price tags, you can get a great mortgage and do like $50k and have a 30 yr mortgage...you may sell after a few years make back your lost cash or stay, either way its the way to go.
i know many people that hate queens, i personally dont care for it but i dont hate it.
but yes take time and visit each neighboorhood, get a feel living there. also make sure you have steady work!
