I think by definition, design is more of an answer or solution to a problem. Where art is an expression or representation of something (tangable or intangable). When your designing something your creating something that serves a predetermined purpose. in the case of a menu, your designing something that addresses the need for an organized list of product, and prices. The designers job in this case is to present something that is functional before it's stylish, although a good designer will strike a balance between the two. Is creating a menu considered artwork? Well i suppose you can call anything art if you want to, but I will call it a menu - which is more a device than anything else.
A movie poster is also a device that is designed to comunicate the title, cast, mood and opening date of a film. There is artwork on the poster, but the poster itself is a design or device which serves a purpose.
Your right, these are just words, designer and artist art and design. But there does seem to be a distinction between the two.

i know few artists. they work so complete different than someone who does something like 'custom design'. in my opinion, an artist creates the same amount of zzzZZZ design as every other creative.
just wanna state my point in this what has been discussed many times.
if u do something _with_ a client you have to find out exactly what he wants. ask questions, help him etc. then start to draw, write concepts, think it all over, show it to friends and co workers, rethink again. be sure it's 100% what matches the case. and then start to realize the drafts on the computer
for avdvertising: talk to the consultant and be sure that he understands why so and not so. that's very important 'cause he has the complaining client on the phone and he needs to understand why the design has to be so as it is. if the suit doesn't get it and is unable to defend the agencys ideas, talk to the CD about that.

“Designers solve problems for clients. Artists solve problems for humanity. The latter is the greatest problem.”

Client's will always like to 'dabble' in the process.
1. Beacuse they (or their company) are paying.
2. Because they have no talent, but want do show the boys back at the office how clever they are.
3. They like the feeling of power they get from giving orders.
4. They just need an excuse to get out of the office.

sorry to say but i fully disagree with that paul rand quote. the point where i disagree with is that rand says that both are equal because both work with form and content, now that would be the case if the form and content would be the same but it isn't. form and content are so broad. architects work with form and content, are they artists? an interiour decorator works with form and content. artist as well? a typographer works with form and content. art? etc. you can even say that any religion works with form and content, is everyone religious an artist or a designer? don't think so.
anyways, except that that last bit of rand is too religious for me (it's up to god) i do agree that art is determined by others and not ourselves. if someone says that what sauerbraten has made is art, it is art.

everyone seems to think being an artist is somekind of job description. Being an artist is being at high level in your chosen ?eld. From chef to filmaker, it doesn't matter if you're doing it for yourself or someone else, money or pleasure.
if you tell the average person you're an artist they will imagine you sitting at an easle with a pallete+brush in your hand!
