How exactly did the UPS re-brand fail?

same here. I like the new UPS logo.
The only slightly insightful commentary I've seen on it was that it would be difficult to reproduce across different mediums. But, given the fact that printing technology will advance much faster than the life of that logo . . .

The redesign of UPS did not fail. It just wasn't received well by a portion of our community as it was seen to replace something classic (sacred even).
Some of us are not ready to accept an identity that was not chiseled out of the negative and positive of black and white.
If it has a gradient, it's perceived to break elementary principles in the creation of an identity as we know it--results: inferior.
The success, however, of the UPS re-brand (and others), is proof that these principles are being rewritten. Call it evolution.

Theres a reason for the simplicity of these 1 color/flat logos like USP, IBM, Apple, etc. Reason being it sticks in your mind and makes an impression easier. It's a science.

It's not a lame thesis. Hail to you.
Design has a wonderful think process. It's one of the great disciplines ever created but the solutions are always so convenient because it's end is lame. It's commercial so it cannot be a set of principles. Maybe design is a way so that people can go into something else.
Do not misread me. It's a great activity but it needs a more solid body. Something that does not go away as design does. Maybe this is just stupid because we have art for that matter, but i always think that design can be something else.
I'm going to get banged around here I know, but that's how I feel. Only those who think design is life can be affected by this remarks of mine.
Design has two ways: either it grows or else it will be always a mirror from our lame mediatic society. And that is not good.
Sucessful design is that that keeps imho, like the hull of a computer. You have an archetype on that. The rest is timely. What doesn't stick of old is the open field of your thesis.
How can you explain that a great logo like IBM's maybe in danger in 1 or 2 years? What is the base for a great logo? if that be targeting that is lame coz people change and nothing is great that does not stand the taste of generations.
i really hope you do a great job. cheers!
