Hi!
I’m writing my degree thesis at moment and need help to think of a example, of really bad design. Or where a project failed miserably. Preferably something classic that many people know about. I have already the redesign of Paul Rand's UPS logo.
(It can be where the message was interpreted wrong or that the design didn't work)Any suggestions?

I guess product design wouldn't count, but I would have otherwise said when the New Coke was used to eradicate what is now known as Coca Cola "Classic."

What's your criteria for failure? Commercial failure? Marketing? Aesthetics?
I concur that it doesn't seem like a good idea for a thesis.

Rasko was pretty harsh there, but I must agree that a thesis with forward thinking and positive intentions is usually what you want to do when saying "Don't do this."
It's hard, yes. But just think what you can do to say (instead) "Do this because you will achieve such & such." I hope that makes sense to you.

Percieved failure's might be a good idea; example, the ups logo. People knocked it initially but it really has been a success for them. It's personally grown on me, to the point that I now question when the local ups hasn't replaced the old with the new. Of course this is just my opinion.

Rasko, I'd love to look for links, but Coca Cola, at one time DID temporarily eliminate what is NOW known as Coca Cola Classic. They got shiteloads of crap for eliminating the original formula to the point where people were boycotting the product, saying that "They don't make Coke anymore."
Research it. It's interesting. Have fun, smart arse.

UPS logo 1963 - 2003 would you call that a failure, I don't think so, just a re-design.
Why not Massimo Vignelli's NYC subway map only ran for six years, no one could read it.

i'd have to dito the tick, define failure. and normally you don't get so see a failure since it's a failure. and on top of that even failures have functions.
