harder to find jobs, but less BS has been my experience.
3D can be very technical, and mastering the software becomes and obsession.
i started with softimage back in 97, jumped to Maya when it came out, and then landed at 3DSMax in 2000, i've been using it ever since, and it is most comfortable to me.
once you learn one package, and the principals of 3D, switching packages is annoying, but no big deal.

3 years i spend on 3d studio max and i still don't know shit about it.
for that you really have to be devoted soley on the program. 3d programs are just so friggin big ya know.
i don't see much work for a 3d artist also fyi. maybe they are hard to come by so when a compnay has one they want to hold on?

my boyfriend uses 3D studio Max and he is very good with it. i learned Animation Master and it sucks ASS. 3D isn't something easy to learn, i would try to take a class or something, it can be quite intimidating

well, if you want to get a job in 3D, then i would stick with one of the big three that i listed before.
3D artists are snobs with their packages.

aleman i am in the same situation... I am thinking of doing MAYA. seems hard, but it's flexible in outputting for stills, broadcast and print quality.

We use Max and Final Render (these is also a fR version for Maya). I like it.
Maya, Cinema, Soft Image, Lightwave are all very good. You need to research which will be used where you want to use it.
Max is nice because it's the most widely used, so if you need a BMW 2002 model, you can find one. Not so with the other packages.
Assuming you are going to buy a copy, Max is damn expensive!

I've been using softimage XSI since about october last year, just dabbling. I continue to be impressed with it. it's very intuitive (for me, once I got the workflow figured out) and productive. and it's dirt cheap now(used to be really spendy). I used 3DSMax before, but never felt as productive in it.
you can get in for $495US or $599 bundled with an ATI Fire GL card certified for it.

what aspect of 3d do you want to do? if its a little of everything, it can be challenging. but generally, you should specialize in an area, even for your own projects . i've seen designers do very cool things with 3d and you can tell they approached it from a very specialized mindset and made it work for them.

Alias has a FREE peronal learning edition of Maya.
They have some tutorials included and you can get yourself a copy of
"Introducing Maya 6: 3D for Beginners"http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…
I am going through it right now and it is alot of fun

i highly recommend Cinema 4D. it is quite powerful and seems a bit more intuitive to learn.
It's also very affordable compared to the other software in its class.
i've been using it for about 6 months and have a lot of examples of it's use by a novice on my site. :-)
to see what pros can do with it; visit Imaginary Forces.

my name is ivan too!

maya is good to learn, for sure. probably the best home-use package. it now ships with mental ray, but at my work we use renderman, too :

nice work superbaka and congrats!
what do you think about the new maxwell renderer?
i can't wait for it to come to c4d this summer. :-)

I started picking up Maya last year, while I was out of work. It's very intense and should be learned if you know you're going to use it on a regular basis, if not everyday.
There is less of a demand for 3d artists on the East Coast because Hollywood and the gaming industry is on the West Coast.
Maya is probably the most impressive piece of software I ever touched.
