have you read:
Learning Maya 6 | Foundation ?
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…Just wondering how it comapres to the book you mentioned
- ivan_cook0
it depends greatly on what you want to do. seek out the work you like and find out what that person uses, cause each program (renderer now) and studio will have a different feel.
KDlab, Tronic, and dbox all use max, but each looks different.
c4d seems bigger in europe (maybe because it was a german co.) but is gaining fast in the states and Imaginary Forces uses it well. Seems also to be the fav of most non Maya, Mac studios.

This topic is brought up about once a week so you can probably search and find good answers to your questions.
From what I gather, most people pick 3D packages by what they learned in school or at work.
You'll find that most architectural places (Trojnic, KDlab, dbox) use 3D Max as it's very well integrated with AutoCAD.
I prefer XSI but in the end, it's all preference and they can all do the same thing.

3d Max... the only way to go... However... Solidworks is pretty amazing! There's really not much you can't do with it. The renderer isn't great though. But the modelling is really simple and easy.

3D Max is the only way not to go if you're on a Mac.

maya has a steep and hard learning curve.. although I hear alot of good comments about the results. I think I will try Maya and Cinema 4D.
Although I don't know if major companies/designers ever used Cinema 4D for broadcast animations...

May's great if you keep it simple. A lot of us nerds forget that and spend 6 months painting the wrinkles on peter parkers anus as a result.
This is what's good -
Super, tell Eric I'm reading his new book and I truly am more popular as a result. But what exactly do you do?
You're sites not really specific, and I'm assuming you didn't complete those shots yourself. Full CGI New York City? right... :)

reaction- to quelch your concerns about whether c4d is used in pro film animation, check out:

I agree with ivan_cook - I prefer Cinema. I started on version 7 and upgraded, the thing I liked the most was that the manual was incredibly well written - I found it indispensable when learning the app - well written documentation is such a rarity for software today *sigh*

I definitely think that knowing what you want to do with the software is key. Check out www.cgtalk.com. Great forum. (Sorry NT)

you are taking the piss, right?

I think from a viability stand point. The industry calls for Maya or 3D Max. Maybe Softimage and Zbrush.
