I've been using softimage XSI since about october last year, just dabbling. I continue to be impressed with it. it's very intuitive (for me, once I got the workflow figured out) and productive. and it's dirt cheap now(used to be really spendy). I used 3DSMax before, but never felt as productive in it.
you can get in for $495US or $599 bundled with an ATI Fire GL card certified for it.
