I swear if you only knew the arguments I've had with people on this subject. I should find one I had with someone a few years back who, for the life of them, couldn't understand why I sketched with a pencil while using Photoshop, to get ideas down without having to do it in PS.
They 100% thought that using a pencil or drawing by hand was pointless, that the compute was the be-all-end-all tool for doing what they did. Sad.Same thing with trying to ask people when the last time was they saw a great sunset. "What do I care about that crap?" would be a typical response.
So I ate them.

hahaha
i used to have the same friggin arguments in school...with people who thought doing a BFA was a waste of time and wanted to do the 4 yr degree and get a job..and hated classes which didnt have have assignments , like create CD covers instead we'd have a more conceptual approach.
But what seems to be the solution then?
i am interning at an ad agency and they are a bunch of really talented people here but it seems like we are reduced to being client's lil deisgn monkey's. doing the same ol crap day in day out, cd cover after cd cover, card ad after car ad....

That's how 75% of this industry is, zed. especially when you are designing by committee. Or when clients have marketing departments.
Sad but true.

anybody who doubts the value of sketching compositions, tell them to make 5 comps in PS while you make 5 sketches. see who finishes first...
i think a lot can be taken away from design portals.. they are great resources... but i definitely pull more inspiration from the old masters than today's so-called rockstar designers.
i think for kids out there who don't know where to start when it comes to a bit of graphic design history... they should just look at their current influences, and then take a look at what/who influenced them, and so on.
nice thread.

it's that small little window of creativity that makes it worth it, though.
oh yeah...
and the huge paychecks.

i know mr d.
but how can we change that?
there has to be a way.perhaps its just one of those time things...slowly it will change...well i should say it is getting better. Companies are seeking more people with MFA's to manage and set up branding standards, MBA's are goign down...finally culture is started to play a part in economics.
let me pull up the other awesome deisgn thread on this subject....
- zedvox0
hehe i also wish ther'ed be more active discussion abotu these issues on here...it seems like there are a few usual suspects who take part in these threads.
and i apologize but i do get very excited about these topics..its one of the few things thats always on my mind. so sorry if i ama jumpy lil fucker :)
- derek20050
yea. like davis said... he finds inspiration all over the place, even on the beach with bits of broken pottery

I wish I had time to really get into this thread... I think design portals are great... if not for anything but sizing up the competition.
- zedvox0
i like the idea of a design community, people feedding of each other's energy but when it becomes about only style and trends..then its something to worry about and i guess thats why we are having this discussion.

the medium you use only really needs to be the facilitator of your message. content still is key. i just think people lose sight of this if all they do is design in a certain way for a certain technology. having a life outside of design would probably bring about better idea creation and thus better work.
and yeah, the ad industry (for the most part) is pumping out the same crap that's tried and true. drop shadows, bevels, "make out logo bigger". awesome. some of it's great, but not for the most part.

maybe no one is "breaking rules" anymore because we are already too free to do what we want. i don't know though. breaking rules doesn't necessarily mean more creative.
i often stay away from contributing to threads on newstoday because most of the time it is just a lot of ass slapping... "hey guy, good job, way to hustle". but i don't feel i waste time looking at links i find here, quite often they are very exciting to see. i'm usually happiest when it's something i can't do myself or it's art related. it's more inspiring.
if you really want to challenge the way you look at solving design problems, focus on the creative process:
1. preparation (research)
2. incubation
3. insight
4. manifestationstep 3 is that "a-ha" moment where ideas just seem to come out of nowhere. if we've take time to do research, the best ideas will often come when we're not thinking about it. when your mind is free of the kinds of things that consume us on a daily basis (like bills, relationships, traffic, etc). research can be as simple as studying visual culture or as hard as learning new software or coding.
we can easily rip off other peoples ideas and adapt them to our own needs... process is harder.
creativity is also about finding new meaning and/or putting something into a new context. think of duchampe putting a urinal in a gallery, or carson challenging readability by using a dingbat font. maybe no one is really searching for new contexts.
or maybe, there are just too many designers now and finding some great, groundbreaking work is like finding a needle in a haystack.

hey thats some good list there..
I am currently stuck at stage 2.
I have done all the research for this project. Its for a well known 'entity'. I have collected and collated imagery, a color scheme and a generic idea of West Coast USA in the 60's, but Im up to my 3rd false start, and its going nowhere.
Any tips on the 'stage 2' anyone ?
- blackspade0
i second the list
thanks bentzenmost interesting thread
- bentzen0
to get past stage 2 you have to stop thinking about it. step 3 happens sometimes when you least expect it. for me, it's that moment when i'm falling asleep, or while i'm shaving or out for a run. basically when my mind is clear of the things that clutter it.
and sometimes those ideas suck and i go back to step 1 and 2. it's all part of the process. and if you're still stuck, maybe you're asking yourself the wrong questions.

I have a problem with reading stuff with too many examples and details, sounds like your faggot ass just wrote me an essay.
What was your point again?
- zedvox0
bravo bentzen, couldnt agree more about the process :)
nice Paul Rand ref, his whole spiel about the process and research is amazing.here's an interview of paul rand johndiggity linked a while back.
it is a must must read.

You speak the truth Bentzen.
Maybe I should try using the mouse in my left hand or something. :).
Appreciate your reply.
