maybe no one is "breaking rules" anymore because we are already too free to do what we want. i don't know though. breaking rules doesn't necessarily mean more creative.

i often stay away from contributing to threads on newstoday because most of the time it is just a lot of ass slapping... "hey guy, good job, way to hustle". but i don't feel i waste time looking at links i find here, quite often they are very exciting to see. i'm usually happiest when it's something i can't do myself or it's art related. it's more inspiring.

if you really want to challenge the way you look at solving design problems, focus on the creative process:
    1. preparation (research)
    2. incubation
    3. insight
    4. manifestation

step 3 is that "a-ha" moment where ideas just seem to come out of nowhere. if we've take time to do research, the best ideas will often come when we're not thinking about it. when your mind is free of the kinds of things that consume us on a daily basis (like bills, relationships, traffic, etc). research can be as simple as studying visual culture or as hard as learning new software or coding.

we can easily rip off other peoples ideas and adapt them to our own needs... process is harder.

creativity is also about finding new meaning and/or putting something into a new context. think of duchampe putting a urinal in a gallery, or carson challenging readability by using a dingbat font. maybe no one is really searching for new contexts.

or maybe, there are just too many designers now and finding some great, groundbreaking work is like finding a needle in a haystack.
