the medium you use only really needs to be the facilitator of your message. content still is key. i just think people lose sight of this if all they do is design in a certain way for a certain technology. having a life outside of design would probably bring about better idea creation and thus better work.
and yeah, the ad industry (for the most part) is pumping out the same crap that's tried and true. drop shadows, bevels, "make out logo bigger". awesome. some of it's great, but not for the most part.
