I keep saying a lot of these places are self loving glamour projects that turn into a giant male ego stroking circle jerk. Nobody believes me.
Some sites can get pretty disgusting, perpetuating some sorry borrowed style that's now over saturated in cyber space. These sites are a good place to start, but not an end all resource for what is good design.
I wish people would stop trying to be so cool all the time and think up something new or at least their own, especially if they're going to parade around screaming "I'm so awesome."
I tried bringing this topic up in another forum recently, and all of the sudden everyone got very defensive. I think they took it upon themselves to fill in the blanks and thought it was a personal attack. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't... but it's a fair observation.

I havnt read all the posts but I think this chap is wrong in some regards.
I think design portals are the equivilant to the magazine that so many designers relied upon before the advent of the internet. It's is the new way of passing along knowledge. Seeing what new trends are out there, especially across borders. I think design portals are crucial.
It is true that people can abuse design portals (the raping of ideas), but this has been done in the past with other mediums.

How about I nor anybody else should get deffensive unless to fool everybody and Design Portals well is a Portal for Designers, a place to gather or a mother fucking black hole to jump into. Beeotch.

following trends isn't necessarily going to create good design so that while i agree a design mag and portal are functioning in similar ways (with the portal having the obvious advantage of being up to the minute rather than what happened last month) they aren't necessarily the best way to find inspiration. maybe a cooking magazine and travel or a book on fishing or whatever other than design will help inspire an idea which could be applied to some kind of design solution. goes back to the old saying "think outside the box" which sounds totally corny now but still applies.

trying to makes sense of that statement makes my head hurt

visit a design portal and you find that there are lots of very talented folks out there, and that a lot of them are pretty decent people.
lots of knowledge, new ideas, plus people willing to help each other out. sounds pretty damn good to me.
i don't buy into the trends bit of that arguement, either.

Scew Design Portals. C'mon. How then, can both Wal Mart & Gucci both be able to make millions of dollars co-existing? Because people have all sorts of needs.
Not everyone needs, nor can afford the luxury of a ground breaking website. So although you have valid points, they aren't suffient enought to make the claim that design portals do more bad then good for the design industry.
It's just like this. Good does not exist without evil, nor does great design exist without lame boring template, run-of-the-mill designs.
so...
That's my 2 cents.

That last post was actually JEEDUB. I didn't know I was still logged in as him, oops.

the trends only happen when people in one particular community feel compelled to satisfy the others. emulation is the highest form of flattery but in this business its called ripping

There we go.

Not for nothing I find myself staring at design portals more then I actually work. I look towards the best and i try hard ass hell to try a new approach but come to the conclusion that no one is really original.
this one of my favorite quotes.
the best way to brake the rules is to never have learned them.

i'm working on this right now i hope its as original as possible but i wont post it because the idea might be stolen hehe

just do
your mind will explore on its own
staring at what you like only makes you thiink of it more
stare at art you dont do like oils or sculpting then go back to what you do
dont be afraid to stop in the middle and start something else
art is never finished
the only important aspect of design is appeasing the user

eric jordan knows nothing about design or original ideas.
i've never heard him say anything valid on either subject.
