From a personal pov, what's it like? I hear stories. Stories like crazies shooting other people for no reason, high theft and murder rates, and really high rent for crappy apartnements?

i used to live in baltimore. its a really seedy, gritty, southern feeling city on the east coast. its got a kick ass art school there and the alums that stick around give the city an artsy coolness. great art scene. but, yeah its a total ghetto. if you can't handle living in an all black city, i mean where the poor have been oppressed, have no opportunity, and only know the street life, then think twice. i got used to it i guess. i loved baltimore. its got a great rocker/punk music scene. if you like to see bands it rocks. plus its less than an hour drive to dc, you can go and come back in one evening, its close to philly, only a day trip to new york, 3.5 hour drive to the beach, and couple hours from the mountains/camping/harper springs wv. i have heard the rents are starting to climb but where aren't they.

I'm from Baltimore, and compared to Tampa its like paradise. Yes, there is a high crime rate and if you are white you are the minority, but unless you are a racist bigot it doesn't feel uncomfortable. Baltimore is also the least segregated city in America. People there are a lot more friendly than they are down here, and it has such a nice mix of architecture and style, ranging from Old European to horrible 50s rowhomes to ultra modern structures. The music scene is awesome and there are over 600 design firms in the area. However, there are even more in DC and unemployment rates are pretty high in Charm City right now. And by the way, the closest beach is only about 2.5 hours away, and it only takes about 25 minutes to get out of the city and into nice rolling hills and farmland.
I guess my biggest gripes with B-mo was that the summers are hot and humid, the roads downtown are crap and the city doesn't focus enough on the bad areas or attempt to clean them up. But it's a great city, and there are definitely decent affordable places to live there, much more so than DC or Philly.

i am from baltimore, moved to dc, and moved back. it is much cheaper than dc and is only 45 minutes away.
the poor people have definitely not been oppressed. most of them are junkies. i live in an okay neighborhood and the guy next door is selling h. there is a lot of that going on araound here. other than that, it's a fun place. property values are getting too high though. if you are looking to buy, stay away. it is one of the most "unique" cities i've been to in the world. it will either grow on you or you will hate it.
the job scene is not good here, but there are plenty of places in the area around dc. baltimore advertising is kind of a joke, i know a couple of the agencies are trying to change that though.

I just moved down here about a month ago from Philadelphia. Thusfar, the city seems alright..there's a lot of areas people generally advised me to go "nowhere near", way more than in Philly...
but the areas that are safe (Federal Hill, Fells Point, Canton, Mt Vernon and the Inner Harbor where I work) are awesome.
Face it- there is no perfectly safe city out there anyway.
:)

i graduated from the art school there and miss the shit out of that city, its one of the best for all the reasons previously mentioned....

yeah everything everyone has said is pretty much true. i'm from there as well and i love the city but don't plan on living there anytime soon because the design opportunities can't rival what i can find in san francisco (where i am now) or new york(where i'll be soon). baltimore is great because it's a big and small city in one, it's convenient to other big east coast cities, and you can live in the surrounding areas and there's still a lot going on (like towson). plus there's a lot of colleges, good sports teams, good bars and music scene, and the chesapeake bay is amazing.

Living in baltimore right now is awesome. Actually had a talk bout it last night with some of my friends. its a growing city and there is a lot of development happening. people from dc are moving up here cuz its cheaper. the night life is pretty good. alot of mixture of architecture. alot of bands playing around town. alot of bars in canton, fells and federal hill. better ones in mt vernon. cool museums. short drive to dc, philly, mountains, ocean. good food. i pump this city up all the time even thuogh of the high crime rate.
and all the area that are bad are really not bad for outisders but for the people that live there. i did photo project for class one time and spent about 3 hours a day for two weeks walking around the "worst" parts of town with a camera and had no problems at all.
Just come down and see what all the bus benches say
"the greatest city in america"

Baltimore City Paper is a good source of information on what is going on in this city

Thanks for all the advice guys/girls. I'm hoping to attend the Art Institute but I was wary of some things. Basically I'm afraid I'll get myself into trouble unwittingly or something but I guess I'm blowing it out of proportion.

I'm a little bored right now....
What's going on in Balmer today?

Was or is the 'Murder Capital of the US of A'. great title ehh? Have been many times though. All of Maryland is a bit dodgy to me, even throughout it's brief history.
Edgar Allen Poe is it's most famous son, no?

Although I do have to admit, the times that I've been to Baltimore have been enjoyable but only as visitor in your Harbour Area. Best Crabcakes I've had in the world.

Spent half of my life in B-More and it is really a unique city, being a black city, with all of what that could mean.
If you're not the kind that think that blacks are gonna kill you just for being white you'll be fine. I always used public transportation and lived downtown and never had any problems.
I like it better than Barcelona anyway.

Crab Cakes!!!! YESSSSSSSS!!
I live in VA, Work in DC and go to baltimore a lot to see my Orioles lose many baseball games.
as with any city there are good places & bad places in it...
I love the inner harbor except they took away Thrashers French Fries ;o////

I got news for the O's. The Expos are coming to town and that will pull a lot of fans out of that base. ;)
- slinky0
Expos are going to be in my back yard in Dulles VA (5-10 min away)... it will not affect O's as much as a DC or even an Arlington team would.
A baseball team will hopefully make my home value go through the roof...
and they better not be called the Expos... that name is synonymous with losing... i wonder what they will call it?/

Washington Senators

Well, throughout sports history teams have moved back and forth and generally when they do go back for nostalgia purposes and these days, marketing purposes, they will probably go with Senators they were saying. Anyway back to Baltimore, it's a great city.

i can see some guy sniffing something in the alley on the side of my house. and a prostitute is checking herself in one of the side mirrors on the cars parked out front. it's really too bad, there is just this one bad house on my street, everyone else is nice.
