Dude, don't get a powerbook - unless you like laptops, then go for it. i have a powerbook and a desktop g5 - love the g5 better, and garage band???? yuck
the money you save by buying a desktop over a laptop and getting a normal monitor (like a viewsonic or something) you can throw towards some real audio apps with some serious horsepower and still not spend as much on a powerbook which you'll be fed up with soon due to the lack of upgradability. just email me or check my site for some ideas on what i use

if it is your only computer, and you can afford it, go 17". no better way. as for software upgrades, ilife comes installed, office you can get from me for the price of prioity mail, I got it for 12 bucks thru my university. Whatever you do, get 1 GB RAM and isight (so sweet). If your main computer is a desktop, get the 12", and again 1GB RAM.
hope this helps

thanks for advice.. it's not my only computer, but it's my only mac.. just have a desktop pc and want a laptop now.. and i want a mac.. ;) so isn't 17" kinda much on-the-go?

xrusos is an avid on the go person and the 17" is no problem for him. I myself don't have a problem with the weight as I'm usually hauling a book with my laptop anyway, so my 14" iBook immediately becomes a 17" Aluminum. The big question though is how are you hauling it? If you are doing a lot of the hauling in a car, then no biggie, if it's on your back all day it makes a difference. So, let's assume it's on your back all the time, then the question is, what kind of work will be done on it?
If you are going to be doing lots of design on the laptop, go with 17" because you'll be able to have your pallettes on screen all the time. If it's just a toy, for e-mail, word processing, and the occasional photoshop work, get the 12".
My two cents, hope they're worth it.

the 17 is overkill, because you will use it for everything, I bought one and I do not touch my top of the line 2.8 PC for anything other than games anymore.
The 17 inch is exactly as they claim, a desktop replacement system. I work on 300 meg billboard files and it is as fast as my PC, although I have double the ram in the pbook.
the 12 is nice, but at that point you might as well get the 12 inch g4 ibook, as they rate pretty much the same in all departmental testing i have seen, other than the dual head video.....

I have the 17" Powerbook, 1gig ram and it's beautiful. Don't let anyone tell you it's too big. You can never have enough screen. It's like saying there's too much money, too much heat or too much sex. Nonsense. You can find a bag and they're not that heavy. If you weren't set on a laptop, I would look into the G5s though. They must be MUCH faster.

My 17" Powerbook, only just fits into my rucsack, but I wouldnt worry about the size or weight. If you have the cash, buy one....the back lit keyboard...mmm...hubba hubba......mmmmm...ooohhh...yeah...

yeah, I haul my 17 inch everywhere, on the train in cabs, its not heavy, 7 pounds is not light, but I had a dell inspiron that was 13 pounds before, this is like a flap of paper in comparison, and the 12 inch is just 2 pounds lighter.

i personally like the 'portable' size of the 12'er better...and you can plugin a monitor at home.
jes' my 2c.

If you do end up going with the 12" iBook, or any iBook for that matter. Buy it from MCE Technologies in LA, you can do it on-line. They install a superdrive, and replace the cd-rw, all for only 120-200. Also, there is a firmware hack which allows the iBook to use dual monitors, doesn't void the warranty either. I'm using it right now and had my lcd replaced just last week :-)
Anyway, for fit and finish, if you go with a 12" buy the powerbook, for lots of pixel real estate go 17"

What's apple?

well, the thing is - i have to buy it in norway.. this is because i "need" our letters æøå hihi, and the powersystem for international electonic gadgets and stuff don't work here.. it's really stupid because i could have been saving about 1150$ dollars if i had bought it on the american apple store instead of the norwegian apple store (1150$ the way i have customised it now).. tsk.. hrmpf..

I lub my 17". I dual monitor it at work and at home... It's just so nice to watch DVD's on the road... My wife watched The Office DVD series on our 10 hour trip.
If they had a 30" laptop that could somehow fold up I'd get that. I think someone else said, You can never have enough screen.
Upgrades: this bag is mondo nice for the 17" (or any notebook):
